Hi. My bff's daughter is really having a hard time. She will reverse her numbers writing a 3 as an E. She is not grasping multiplication facts. She's known 7x2=14 but now she will write 41. She's doing math u see and she says she gets it but when she's working it's obvious she's not getting it. She also has a hard time writing out the math probs... Cant line up the problems well and loses the place value. My friend is just fried.

This is her first year homeschooling. When she was in school they said that there was no help available for her because she wasnt bad enough. She was functioning so they were on their own. To have her evaluated would cost big bucks. Mild dyslexia? Dysgraphia? She reads at a middle school level.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Anything you can suggest to try would be most helpful. Please pray for them as this is really stressing both mom and kid out. Thanks in advance. Sarah

I do'nt understand... is she just writing things incorrectly or does she really not understand the process? You said she knows 2x7=14 but she'll write 41. Not knowing the process verses writing it incorrectly are two different things.

She could very well have a disorder known as dyscalculia. It's like dyslexia, but with math. I would have her mom check into it. Also Trigger Memory has a DVD called Times Tales that helps with learning multiplication facts. It's amazing how it works.

I hope that helps,
Tracy

As far as the reversal of the 3...try this. Tell her to start every three as if she is making the letter "c". Then 3 will always face the right way. ;) The same trick works for reversals for the letter "s" and lowercase "d". HTH

ok... I have to ask how this can work... I understand for the s and d, but not the 3. That would make her 3 backwards wouldn't it?

haha... funny thing was I was sitting "writing" c's and 3's in the air to figure it out... My kids get 3s backwards a lot, so I was thinking that would be an easy way to help them! (My oldest two are lefties, and my youngest two are little :) )
