Health
Health
Question for Carrie...Why is health not taught? I've been adding ABeka's health program, but starting with 3rd grade the only teacher manual they have is their health & science manual. I don't want to waste the money, but it made me curious why you don't teach health topics in your guides. From what I've noticed all curriculums except ABeka neglect this until Jr High.
Re: Health
I am not Carrie, but I can tell you that my state requires I cover health in some form every year and I haven't had trouble saying I am doing that with the books that are in the programs I have used. It isn't a full health curriculum, but health topics are covered. In Preparing for science he read a book on Louis Pasteur and microbes so that covered the topic of disease. In CTC he did an anatomy study as part of the science as well as the book "The history of Medicine". This year in RTR we are doing the books "From boy to men" and "What is God's design for my body". Next year for Rev to Rev I will probably just get a few library books to cover some topics I think he hasn't covered. I think most people in the early years just figure they cover health topics such as hygiene and nutrition as part of your everyday conversations and teaching you do as a parent.

Re: Health
When I lived in NE, I had to write out what topics we covered for health. I always listed a few covered through science (nutrition, anatomy, germs, etc.) as well as topics we covered through daily life (dental care, safety, good eating, PE, etc.). I think we do a pretty good job of covering it without a formal curriculum.

Re: Health
I asked the same question on another board. I just (today) bought some used A Beka Health books. I like Lynn H's idea of the books that are already used in the curriculum. I'll be doing Bigger in the fall, so there aren't any "health" type books to read in that curriculum. Rethinking things, I guess I could have looked for an age appropriate book to use in our DITHOR for the non-fiction genre! Maybe Carrie or Julie will take a peek at this thread and offer some advice as well. Are there any books out there that you could recommend that would be "health" worthy that might also fit into our curriculum (whether one of the guides or DITHOR)?
