Depth of DITHOR & ? about Biblical genres

My dd7 is currently finishing up BLHFHG. I plan to use BHFHG next year, but was undecided on whether to use DITHOR yet. She is a few weeks from finishing the emerging readers (which have been 'easy' for her) and her fine motor skills/writing abilities are fine...I just wasn't sure that I want to have Storytime & DITHOR, & I wanted to have more "Bible reading" time if possible (we really enjoyed her reading through the Beginner Bible with ER's & was looking for something like that to balance out all the 'pleasure' reading). Anyway, I searched & previewed many reading curriculum's and none of them seem to require the depth of thinking that DITHOR does nor deal with character traits/analyzing reading material from a Christian perspective. So my new plan (due to DITHOR's flexibility to use your own book choices) is to integrate some extra Bible reading into DITHOR by using Biblical genres...for example, read Esther &/or Ruth for the Biography genre & read various parables for the Folktale genre. Has anyone else done this? If so how did it work for you??

I have no wisdom on this topic because I haven't even started HOD yet, but I think that idea sounds very clever!
I think I will hold on to that idea!

hope someone with more experience has some input for you!

Hi Pam! Great minds think alike because what you are describing is what Carrie did in DITHOR within the Godly Character traits lessons! :D At the younger levels, Godly character lessons focus on relating personally to 2 Godly traits, comparing Biblical and book characters, and selecting one area to improve. In the middle levels, Godly character lessons focus on relating personally to 3 Godly character traits, comparing Biblical and book book characters, and selecting one area to improve. In the upper levels, Godly character lessons focus on relating personally to 4 Godly traits, comparing Biblical and book characters, and selecting one area to improve. For each of these lessons, we pull out our Bibles and learn so much from our discussions. DITHOR does an incredible job of helping dc to learn to read with moral discernment, to use the Bible as a measure of Godly character, and to search and "grow" Godly character within themselves. I think you will really love this part of DITHOR, as well as so much else! :D

The Storytime and DITHOR may have some things in common, but they serve somewhat different purposes (though double-dipping in Godly character traits study was a WONDERFUL thing to do anyway with both of our sons when they each did BHFHG  ). Here is a link that explains this purposeful planning...
