books for my 5th grader. Is there a comprehensive list somewhere that adds a significant amount of literature for Preparing. I don't want to reinvent the wheel if this has already been done.

Not sure where your child places or what you plan on using, but you can use the extension books, which add more history at a higher level or use his/her reading level books with DITHR. With DITHR you can do literature study at whatever level they need, ie, level 4/5, 5/6 or 6/7/8.

Thanks. I had already planned on the extension package, but that is only 10 books. I am having a hard time with the fact that HOD seems so light compared to other program. When I showed it to DD, she said where's the books? I am happy to buy more (I am thinking in terms of 50 plus more), I am just wondering if somebody has produced a list already.

I am doing the complete Preparing program and have a shelf full of 35 books plus the teacher's guide. If you added in the extension package for Preparing and the DITHOR program at whichever level your dd is you should have more than 50 books!

To do the complete program you should have the economy package which includes the Teacher's Guide and the 4 History books, the Science add-on which is 9 books, the basic package which includes all the Read-Aloud books for Storytime - another 10 books, the deluxe package which includes another 12 books covering the Independent History box in the guide. If you add on the extension package another 10 and also the DITHOR books.

If your dd is still needing more to read, I would say let her choose books from the library and enjoy them on her own time.

HOD has been a great program for our family who loves to read, individually and as a family. We've had our happiest homeschool years using HOD.

Thank you!! I am actually going to skip science as we do Apologia and have already read the One Small Square books. I will look at this more and try and decide. Thanks again.

The other thing is if you add in DITHR, that is another 9 books a year. Another thing you could possibly do it get the extension pack from Bigger and have her read those too. Mind you, if she is anything like my girls they read at least two or three library books a week that have nothing to do with school. The one thing I really love about HOD is that it isn't all about the reading, but doing things linked to the reading.

With the One Small Square books, has your daughter just read them, or has she been through doing narrations, experiments etc. HOD doesn't do the experiments in the book, but does oral narrations, there own experiments, notebooking and answering questions. It would most likely be a completely different look at each book, and quite possibly really help cement the information in her mind.

Anyway, just a thought.

And the other thing is, how old is your daughter, is it that she places better in CTC or RtR. My 10 yr old, almost 11 is a pretty smart cookie and is doing the extensions with Preparing currently but really it is not challenging her a great deal. The most challenging thing is the extra work for the extension books, but even that is not overly difficult for her, so we are moving her to RtR mid year when we can afford to get it. I expect then that she will be enjoying school even more than what she is now.

HOD draws from Charlotte Mason's philosophy of savoring books and not rushing through them. That is why the readings are intentionally not very long. They are longer as you go up in guides. Also adding all the follow up activities allows for that same thing to really think about what they are reading and apply t hat knowledge. It is far from light if a child is placed properly. There are so many other skills/activities tied into the reading. I agree that if it looks like not enough maybe she should be placed in a higher guide.

DD will be 10 when we start this. I have no doubt she could handle CtC or RtR, but I would like to keep her with her 8 yo sister. Thank you for your thoughts. It all helps!
