Am I crazy to juggle 4 different Guides???

I am new to HOD, not to HSing. This is my 11th year, or *officially* my 6th. I have not purchased any HOD Guides yet, but attempting to plan for next year. We have 7 children I am HSing, next school year they will be 12yo, 10 yo, 8yo, 6 yo, 4 yo and 2 yo twins. I am used to patching curriculum together, though I have certain ones I like to use such as Christian LIght or Saxon for math, IEW for Language Arts, and Sonlights book lists for HIstory and Science. I love the way HOD is layed out and no planning required from me, Christian elements and of course the price! My big questions is, am I totally insane for thinking I can manage 4 different guides? Here's what I am thinking would best suit my group:
Creation to Christ for my soon-to-be 12yo
PHFHG for my 10 yo AND soon-to-be 8 yo. (They are doing a lot of the same grade/level work, such as math and read on the same level and are also similiar in maturity as well.)
BLHFHG for my soon-to-be 6 yo
and finally
LHTH for my soon-to-be 4 yo and 2 yo twins
I am thinking this will work because the oldest will not require as much teacher involvement as the 6 yo, and the 8 & 10 yo will need middling teacher involvement, and then the youngests' Guide only takes half and hour, so that isn't a huge time drain.
Has anyone done this many Guides before? Is there a different configuration of grouping students that would work better? Am I overthinking, or making placment harder than it has to be? Am I just asking for a nervous breakdown??? LOL
I have also considered: A.) leaving twins out of it, then having 4 yo and 6 yo do LHFHG, then oldest 3 do PHFHG: but the 6 yo is an emerging reader, the 4 yo isn't quite ready for phonics, although the placment would do for the other 3 children. This would use only 2 guides. B.) 10 yo and 12 yo CTC; 6 yo & 8 yo BLHFHG, but I think the placement is a bit high for the 10yo and far too low for the 8 yo. Two guides again. C.) Stick with my 1st configuration, but drop the guide for the youngest 3 children and just go with the Rod&Staff workbooks that I usually use for my 3/4 yos. That puts me at 3 guides. D.) PHFHG for 8yo, 10, & 12 yo, BLHFHG for the 6 yo, LHTH for 2 yos and 4 yo -or- E.) like D. except drop guide for littles
If it helps to know, the 10 yo will be using Saxon for math (low teacher involvement) and the 6, 8 and 10 will be using CLE ( again LTI); for Language Arts we use IEW, which has a fair amount of teacher involvement, but I feel that is par for the course and needed for proper treatment for the subject. I don't care for the idea of giving up the Guide for the littles because they need a little something too and it looks like it would take less time than what I am doing now and more fun!
As you can see this is a complex question and I completely understand if you read my post, say Thank You Jesus it's her and not me and move on! LOL

I personally would group your two oldest in Preparing, your next two in Bigger and the littlest ones would get a storytime and a kiss from mama. lol

Ultimately you are the only one that can decide where your children place properly. Have you considered Bigger for the 8 and 10 year old? Perhaps you could do CTC for the 12 year old, Bigger for the 8 and 10 yo, LHFHG for the 4 and 6 yo. For the twins, I would carve out intentional time to read them books as their "school time". Bigger is a wonderful skill building year that sets up Preparing perfectly and has extensions you can use for your 10 year old. Also, if you put your 4 and 6 year old into LHFHG you can keep them combined all the way up. You can use K options for the younger and 1st grade options for the older and go at their pace ... while keeping them together for all the History, Activities, Science, and extras.

I would in your situation, being new to HOD, do CTC for the 12, Bigger for the 8 and 10, LHFHG for the 6, and then LHTH when I wanted to for the younger ones.
LHTH takes very very little time, and it gives them the feeling that they are doing what the big ones are doing. LHFHG also takes very little time as written if the child is placed correctly.
Bigger would allow the 8 and 10 year olds to learn the flow of HOD, and you could make some of the boxes semi-independent or even independent since they are older. Like, notebooking, vocabulary, copywork, cursive/handwriting, etc. I'm not sure how much time your different curriculum for math and grammar would take....
And I can't really comment on CTC since I'm not there yet, but it seems like a good starting point for older students and it would let you skip a guide instead of doing back to back.
And 4 guides isn't overly crazy when they are placed correctly. I'll be doing 4 guides starting in May, but all I'll be adding in is LHTH a few days a week. I'm already doing 3 guides and it's totally easy.

I don't have much advice but did want to mention what helped me. I am currently using Preparing with my 10 and 11 yr. old boys. Beyond with my 9yr. old son and Little Hearts with my youngest 7.8yr. old. I didn't start all the guides at once. Dec. I started with Beyond, Jan. I started Preparing and I just started Little Hearts with Lance almost three weeks ago. This has worked really well for me. I didn't feel overwhelmed.

I wanted to also mention that I stopped using things like WWE, Simply Spelling, other copywork etc. The only thing I kept was AAS. Again, I didn't want to be overwhelmed. I am using my own math and phonics programs.

Thank you so much for your insight, it was just the kind of info I was looking for. I did not consider Bigger for my 8 & 10 yo because I was merely looking at the chart and do not know the curriculum like you ladies obviously do. I generally would never consider curriculum for 2 yos, but the LHTH Guide looks like so much fun that it would be alright to have them tag along with the 4 yo. I think I will try combining the 4 yo and 6 yo with the LHFHG Guide, though, it will make life easier in the long run.
Now to prayfully consider! Thanks again for everyone's invaluable help!!

I just wanted to encourage you to keep on working, until you find a great fit for your needs. HOD is a great program! Very Christ-centered and high quality!
I originally started out our 10 year old in CTC because that's where I thought he was on the placement chart, however we ended up dropping him back to Preparing because he was pretty unfamiliar to this style of learning, and CTC was pretty meaty!
He fit perfectly in Preparing and did such a wonderful job with it and loved it all year! So I say all of that to encourage you to find a good fit for your students. The right fit will make all the difference.
You may have heard that it's often better when combining, to fit the program to the younger child and then beef it up for the older one. That way each child is appropriately challenged at their level.
It sounds like you have several good options to consider!
Just take your time and try to evaluate how much time you'll have for individual teaching times and try to map out a plan from there where each child would best fit. If that means combining. . . great! If that means teaching four guides, that's great, too!
LHTH is a very good program for littles and I'd say takes about a half and hour a day to do. It really doesn't feel like an extra guide, because it's so quick and easy to accomplish each day!
I'll also add that we use CLE for math, too! We would probably have used Singapore if we'd come across HOD sooner. Carrie allows for you to use whatever your preference is for math, just knowing that some programs might be more teacher intensive or take longer to do. We've found that with careful planning and dilegence, we can make multiple guides run smoothly each day, as long as that's where everyone fits well.
When you begin, make sure to give some time to adjust to how HOD works. Things may be a little unfamiliar when starting something new, as you'll need that time for you and your little students to get accustomed to everything.
Blessings as you plan!

It will only make things easier if the 4yo is completely capable of doing everything in the guide as written by the... second half? last third? You want the child to be completely able to do everything before moving on to the next guide.

I am doing 4 guides right now, CTC, Preparing, Beyond and LHTH. It is doable ONLY because my children are placed correctly. Placement is key with HOD and easy to do with the help of this wonderful board.
I agree that you could very easily place your 4 yr old and 2yr olds in LHTH. The 2 yr olds will enjoy it but could redo it at a later date and get more out of it. LHTH would be a great program for your 4 yr old, especially since just turning 4 and you shared he isn't ready for phonics.
Your 6 yr old could place in LHFHG or BLHFGH. Where does 6 yr old place in areas of writing, grammar and math? This helps deciding between the 2.
I would ask the same questions for placement for your 12 yr, 10 yr and 8 yr old. These are very important in placement. When you have time to share where they place we can give our best recommendation.
I want to encourage you that 4 guides is completely sane

Good to hear the littles are a good fit for LHTH. I have no prob with having 2 yos cycle thru it a couple times. More bang for the buck! lol
the 6 yr old is def an emergent reader. She knows all her letters and many phongrams/dipthongs and has about 30 words she knows by sight and is fairly good at sounding out words. She can write her letters fairly well, but she has not begun any spelling instruction, and aside from writing individual words, she is not *writing* yet, if that makes sense. Hmm, not certain what I should tell you of grammar. Is there some particular benchmarks you could name? We do use IEW curriculum for everyone's Writing. She is in the PAL Reading & Writing, Part 1 Lesson 20, if that means anything to you. For math she can count orally past 50, write up to 20, knows concepts of less, more, add/subtract using object tell time to the hour, count pennies. I will be starting her on CLE's 100 Level Math as soon as it shows up in the mail; she is ready for it.
8 yr old reads at a 6th gr level, his writing skills are somewhat lacking as he has been coping with dysgraphia and has finally made some progress. I can transcribe for him his thoughts and his content is reasonable, but when he has to do the physical act of writing, it is such a struggle to write that his penmanship, spacing etc. are very poor and has ill effect on getting thoughts on paper. He does understand basic sentence parts (subject/verb, capitalization, puncuation, making sense). He is in Part 3 Lesson 5 of PAL Writing. He does CLE Math as well, he is about 60% complete with Level 200. He is just getting started with multiplication. He has learned how to subtract with borrowing and is struggling a little with it. He can tell time, count money, count up to any number. Just learning to write numbers in the thousands place value. Knows some fractions. I am sure there is more but drawing a blank!
10 yo reads at a 5th grade level (her and her 8 yo brother seem to be about the same in this subject). She is using Student Writing Instensive A from IEW. She does quite well with writing. She has been working on key word outlines and rewriting source material in own words from outline. She needs help with it, but no more than seems appropriate. She is not much ahead of the 8 yo in math, tho. She is about 15% complete with Level 300. Working on some geometry, lines, rays, etc.
12 yo reads at 9 grade level. She is doing same writing program as 10 yo, but assignments are a breeze and generally doesn't need help. She is in Saxon 76, about Lesson 20; fair amount of prealgebra topics.
Hope I gave enough info!

Blessedwith8,
The ladies are doing a terrific job of helping you talk through possible placement options.
As you already know, there are several different options that could be possibile. As we try to help you decide which option is best it can take a bit of back and forth. However, once you find the right fit we pray that your family may be blessed by what we have to offer!
As I'm reading through your thread, based on what you've shared so far, I'm leaning toward LHFHG as being a good solid placement for your 6 year old. As far as your older kiddos go, I need a few more questions answered before I can really get a feel for where they place.
First of all, since it sounds like you'll be using your own math, I think it is important to take that consideration out of the equation as far as which HOD programs will fit your kiddos best. So, for now, we'll set aside any math related advice.
Next, I'm wondering if your 12, 10, or 8 year olds have been reading their history or science at this point and if so which kiddos? I'm also wondering if you've ever done a more "formal" curriculum with your older kiddos in the areas of history or science, and if so which one? I ask because this will give us a good starting point as to what they have had in the past in these areas and possibly what they are capable of doing.
Next, I'm wondering how independent the older kiddos have been up to this point and whether they read and follow a series of written directions well on their own? If you are able to give a bit of info. about each of your older children in this area that would be great!
Then, I'm wondering if you can share a title or two that each of your older kiddos are currently reading on their own?
One more thing that will help is to know whether they do much writing throughout their school day, or whether the writing is mainly limited to their writing programs? Last, I'm wondering what each child has had in the way of formal grammar programs?
If you get a chance to share these things, I think we can help advise you much better!
Blessings,
Carrie

First of all, since it sounds like you'll be using your own math, I think it is important to take that consideration out of the equation as far as which HOD programs will fit your kiddos best. So, for now, we'll set aside any math related advice.
I STARTED WITH CLE MATH YEARS AGO AND SWITCHED A COUPLE TIMES TO OTHER PROGRAMS AND FOUND CLE STILL CAME OUT ON TOP, IT WOULD TAKE A LOT OF PERSUADING TO GET ME TO CHANGE THE MATH WE'RE DOING
Next, I'm wondering if your 12, 10, or 8 year olds have been reading their history or science at this point and if so which kiddos?
HISTORY AND SCIENCE I LIKE TO USE 'LIVING' BOOKS VS. TEXTBOOKS. ALSO LIKE THE TOPIC SCHEDULE LAID OUT IN "A WELL TRAINED MIND." 4 YR CYCLE ON BOTH TOPICS. SADLY, THE CYCLE HASN'T BEEN STRICTLY FOLLOWED AS THERE WAS A YEAR OF PUBLIC SCHOOL THROWN IN 2009/10, THEN I HAD THE TWINS SUMMER 2010 AND THE FOLLOWING YEAR WE HOMESCHOOLED, BUT I RELIED ON A LOT OF WORKBOOKS MOST OF THE YEAR AND THEN TOWARDS MARCH GOT BACK INTO MY 'CLASSICAL' GROOVE. THEY ARE ALL READING SCIENCE AND HISTORY BOOKS. I'm also wondering if you've ever done a more "formal" curriculum with your older kiddos in the areas of history or science, and if so which one? THE 12 YO HAS HAD SOME REAL SCIENCE 4 KIDS (CHEMISTRY), EARTH SCIENCE WAS COBBLED TOGETHER, AND THIS YEAR SHE IS USING CLASSICQUEST SCIENCE LOGIC STAGE BIOLOGY. THE 10 YO I GENERALLY HAD TAG ALONG WITH OLDER SISTER BECAUSE HER READING SKILLS WEREN'T VERY STRONG, THO SHE HAS IMPROVED A LOT THIS YEAR SO I HAVE HER DOING R.E.A.L. SCIENCE ODYSSEY CHEMISTRY LEVEL 1. 8 YO WAS MOSTLY JUST READING CHAPTER STYLE BOOKS ON SCIENCE TOPICS, THIS YEAR HE IS USING R.E.A.L. SCIENCE ODYSSEY EARTH AND SPACE LEVEL 1. I AM NOT SURE IF YOU ARE WONDERING, BUT INITIALLY USED 'STORY OF THE WORLD' AS A HISTORY SPINE FOR TWO YEARS, HAD OUR FORAY INTO PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR ONE YEAR; THEN GOT INTO SONLIGHT, THO I ONLY USED THEIR BOOK LISTS AS I WAS NOT INTERESTED IN THE WHOLE CORE THING, SO THERE'S A WHOLE BUNCH OF BOOKS THEY'VE READ.
ON A SCALE OF 1-10 (10 BEST), FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS, I WOULD SAY THE 12 YO IS AN 8, THE 10YO A 5-7, AND THE 8 YO AN 8, WHEN I CAN GET HIM FOCUSED. THE 12 YO IS ALMOST COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT WORKER, I GIVE HER LIST AND SHE GOES AND DOES WHAT SHE NEEDS TO DO. I CHECK ON HER REGULARLY TO MAKE SURE SHE UNDERSTANDS WORK BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS WHEN SHE SHOULD. THE 10 YO IS FAIRLY INDEPENDENT AS WELL, THO SHE TENDS TO NEED MORE EXPLAINING, AND I GENERALLY GO OVER INSTRUCTIONS WITH HER FOR SEVERAL LESSONS OVER A PERIOD OF DAYS UNTIL SHE IS FAMILIAR WITH THE LAY OUT AND RHYTHM, OR ELSE SHE TENDS TO SKIP STEPS OR MISUNDERSTAND DIRECTIONS. THE 8 YO IS A WHOLE NOTHER KETTLE OF FISH AS HE READS VERY WELL AND COMPREHENDS LIGHTNING QUICK, HOWEVER, GETTING HIM TO STAY ON TASK AND COMPLETE HIS WORK IS THE TRICK. CLEAR EXPECTATIONS, TIME LIMITS, INCENTIVES, CONSTANT SUPERVISION AND A DISTRACTION FREE WORK AREA ARE THE ONLY WAYS TO KEEP HIM ON TASK.
Then, I'm wondering if you can share a title or two that each of your older kiddos are currently reading on their own?
12 YO 'A THOUSAND NEVER EVERS' 'BATTLE HYMN OF THE TIGER MOTHER'
10 YO 'DIARY OF AN EARLY AMERICAN BOY' 'CIVIL WAR SUNDAY' (MAGIC TREEHOUSE BOOK)
8 YO 'THE BFG' 'THE AMERICAN BOYS' HANDY BOOK'
One more thing that will help is to know whether they do much writing throughout their school day, or whether the writing is mainly limited to their writing programs? Last, I'm wondering what each child has had in the way of formal grammar programs?
THEY EACH WRITE AT LEAST A PAGE IN THEIR JOURNAL EVERYDAY. BUT THE WRITING IS MAINLY LIMITED TO WRITING PROGRAM. 8 YO HAS HAD NO FORMAL GRAMMAR. THIS YEAR 10 AND 12 YO HAVE HAD ONLINE LANGUAGE ARTS THROUGH ODYSSEYWARE. THE YEAR BEFORE THEY USED ELEMENTARY LANGUAGE SKILLS WORKBOOK, AND BEFORE THAT SHURLEY ENGLISH (THO THIS WAS ONLY THE OLDEST), AND THE 10 AND 12 YO HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT USE OF THE R&S BUILDING CHRISTIAN ENGLISH SERIES, THO I TENDED TO HAVE THEM DICTATE THE ANSWERS TO LESSONS TO ME AS ALL THE WRITING MADE LESSONS FAR TOO LONG AND DIFFICULT TO MAKE PROGRESS.
IT HAS BEEN ONLY IN THE LAST 4 MTHS THAT I HAVE HAD THE 8 YO DO MUCH WRITING AS IT HAS BEEN SO PAINFULLY DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO DO. HAND STRENGTH AND MOTOR SKILLS HAD TO CATCH UP! BUT HIS SPELLING ABILITIES ARE QUITE GOOD. THE 10 YO HAS A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH SPELLING, SO GETTING HER TO WRITE HAS BEEN HARD, BUT I HAVE FOUND THE DAILY JOURNALING HAS BEEN VERY BENEFICIAL FOR HER. I GATHER SPELLING WORDS FROM HER WRITING, SO HER SPELLING HAS IMPROVED BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS AND THE SAME FOR STRUCTURE, ETC. THE 12 YO WRITING ABILITIES SEEM TO BE ON PAR FOR OTHER CHILDREN HER AGE, NO NOTED DIFFICULTIES THERE.
If you get a chance to share these things, I think we can help advise you much better!
Blessings,
Carrie
I hope that's enough info! It's a lot to process and as I read it it made me realize where we've been!

You REALLY CAN do four guides. I run 3 plus DITHOR And feel I could add another. It is doable.
