R&S English-Teaching Question. . .

I've been using HOD and R&S English together for two years now, and we just can't say enough about how much HOD has changed our homeschool for the better!! :D

I recently spoke to a mom who also uses R&S English, but uses it in a more independent way. She doesn't teach it to her child, but has the child do it on their own, coming to her with questions as needed. This child is in level 6 if I remember right. I was wondering what HOD's recommendations are about this? We've always done R&S English together as that's what was always recommended. We actually prefer doing the lesson orally together, leaving the last little bit of the lesson to be written work by the student. This doesn't take us long, and we very much enjoy our one-on-one teaching time.

But I was wondering if this is going to always be the recommendation as we move through the guides? We are just finishing up CTC and will be starting RTR very soon. So another question would be if there will be a time using R&S that we should shift the english instruction to more of an independent format?

We will most likely keep doing things the way we have been, as it is such an enjoyable time together, and really seems to help in understanding the lesson when we can talk it over as we go along. (Not to mention, I'VE learned so much through teaching it! )I was just curious what HOD's intention is in this area! :D

Thanks! :D

I don't know the answer to this, but I really love doing R&S with my girls. My oldest doing Grade 5, and I love that I get to learn all of it. Something, I missed while I was at school. I can't see why you couldn't make it an independent but my feeling is they are going to become more independent as time goes on, if I can keep a few things to do with them, I will feel a little more connected I think.

HOD's recommendation is to keep doing exactly what you are doing. At least all the way through MTMM, HOD intends for parents to partner alongside their dc in R & S English. You are right, it doesn't take long and the teaching time is a valuable, overall enjoyable time with our dc. You are doing things just right and reaping the benefits. This is the joy of taking time to truly teach our dc. I'd keep on going the way you are and keep up the good work! :D HTH!

In Christ,
Julie

Thanks so much for your reply Julie! :D I appreciate your insight on this and am quite relieved that we can expect things to pretty much stay the same. It's working for us and we're loving it! :D

I'm a junior high English teacher in my background and I would encourage you to continue with the grammar instruction together. Quite often the exercises in any grammar book can be completed correctly without actually mastering the concepts. I look forward to beginning our journey with R&S next year in Bigger! I'm glad to hear it has been so much enjoyed by you!
