Steph,
You can do it either way.

When we did the state study from the Dean's with our oldest son, we did use the
My State Notebook. I chose to go that route, because my oldest son is not an artsy type of guy, and I wanted the state study to be well-done but not terribly time-consuming. I had wondered if doing it with the binder would add too much time to our day?
As I'm on the verge next year of doing the state study with my second son, I think I will also use the
My State Notebook option, but this time I'll likely choose it because this particular son is VERY artsy.

There is already quite a bit of timeline sketching, notebooking, nature journaling, and Draw and Write type assignments in MTMM. So, in looking for balance I think I'll use the pre-fab notebook.

However, the choice will be up to each family.

Here's a link to the individual state study we'll be recommending and allotting time for once weekly in MTMM. Link:

For those families who are not from the U.S. or who are from the U.S. but have already done a study of their individual state, this option can be skipped. Bear in mind that all states require a study of their individual state to be completed as part of their state standards.
Blessings,
Carrie
