DITHOR..., OH MY!

Post by MamaMary » Sat May 10, 2008 12:47 pm

Ok, I bought the whole sha-bang last January. (all of my HOD programs and DITHOR) I did this because I wanted to get started with my HOD programs, but I didn't want to start DITHOR until the fall. So it's been sitting on my shelf for the past 5mos.

Well, I am needing to turn in my class descriptions for the fall session of our co-op and DITHOR is one of my big possibilities. (I thought it would be fun to teach this in a group setting)

So I sat down today and read through the "How To Get Started"! :o :!:

I LOVE it! I knew I liked it when I chose it, but truthfully I was basing that decision on the wonderful testimonies more than any kind of investigation on my part   (Julie was my salesperson! She did such a good job sharing how she used the program)

Today I sat down and went through it...., WHOA :!: :!: :!:

I had just planned to do it with my older son, but now am going to order the books for my younger boys as well. I LOVE it! I will probably spread it out over 2-3 years and we will take our time. But there is NOTHING on the market like this.

I have a Question for those using this :?:

If you are using DITHOR would you still do the "StoryTime" activity in the lesson plans of "Beyond" or "Bigger"? I am thinking you wouldn't need to, is that right?

Thanks!
Mary

That is so great to hear, Mary! :D Makes me want to hurry up and be ready for Drawn....but right now I'm just happy to finally be ready for the emerging readers!

This question has been asked before, b/c it does seem like both wouldn't be necessary, but I think (not totally sure) that Carrie and Julie recommend continuing with storytime. With storytime, YOU read to your children and with Drawn, the CHILD reads to you.....make sense? I would like to hear from others though, who have done both, b/c I wonder if the activities and questions get redundant??

Keep us posted on how your class goes, sounds like a lot of fun for some lucky kids!!

I think part of the point of the read alouds is that you can read above their reading level and they will comprehend more especially if they are not fluent readers. Besides, who wants to get rid of cuddle on the couch time with six kids. I know you love it too, Mary. :D

Please give us all the details on the co-op and what levels you taught. And I want to hear all your tips! 8)

Mary,

I'm so glad that you've gotten a chance to look through DITHR. We're of course very biased, but agree that there is nothing else out there like it. (And believe me, before writing anything, I look long and hard to see if I can find something to we could just recommend instead).

Also, here's an older thread on the storytime topic:
