new here and thinking ahead

Hi everyone! I've been browsing through the boards for about a week now, and you all seem so helpful and friendly! :D

I am so excited about beginning next year with my 13yo dd with HOD! She's in ps 6th grade right now. I have tons of questions, but for now I am concerned with placement of course. DD and I decided ctc would be a great place to start (well, actually she insists she's ready for the next guide, but we should start with creation, right?). My concern is that if we do one guide a year we will be behind one year. Going backwards from the high school guides she should be starting rtr. Does that make sense?

What are your thoughts? Thanks so much!

Welcome! :D I think you and your daughter are going to love HOD!

Personally, I think it's okay if you don't end up doing all the guides before she graduates. The most important thing with HOD is placement according to her skill level. Have you looked at the placement chart yet? Here's a link: http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php

Once you do that, could you let us know where she places according to the chart? :D

I have looked at those charts 100 times. :?

Looking at age, reading, grammar, and math skills she is definitely falling in the RtR guide. But I'm pretty sure ps doesn't have them do dictation or narration at all, and isn't that a major thing with HOD? And she's never done any kind of Bible studies or reading  (other than when we read a few verses aloud as a family).

I'm sorry to have guided you to the charts you've already looked at so much! I just wanted to make sure you'd seen them! :D

I'm hoping that some more experienced ladies chime in, because my oldest is just in Bigger. But here's my best advice...

Since she's coming from ps, I think it would definitely be better to go with CtoC. It will be a wonderful change for her, but you're right that the narration and dictation skills are going to be new to her. You could always add in the Extensions Package if you wanted to give her more in the way of history reading.

I hope that helps, and also wait and see what some other ladies suggest!

Thank you, Heart_Mom! We will definitely go with CtC and worry about high school when we cross that bridge. :)

You already received excellent advice, so I'll just welcome you to the board and say I'm very glad you are going to get to start with CTC! It will take your dd through history right from the beginning - the ancients, and then the next 3 guides will take her through the rest of history to modern times. CTC is a foundational year - we enjoyed it so much. It was a growing year for my ds in so many way - I'm glad you and your dd will get to enjoy it! :D

In Christ,
Julie

I just wanted to echo everybody elses advice. Going from public school to homeschool takes a little bit of time and starting with CTC would give you both a little bit of wiggle room skill wise. You mentioned that your daughter hasn't had much formal Bible. Well with CTC she would get to start with Biblical history and then move on through the entire history rotation. I wouldn't worry about not getting to finish high school rotation. There are lots in the boards sucessfully using the extentions. They will asure you it's plenty. No matter which year you choose I hope you both have a great year.
