DITHOR vocab question

My seven-year-old son has just started Bigger with DITHOR 2/3. I started to do his first DITHOR vocab activity with him but ran into a little snag. He skimmed today's portion of Amelia Earhart and could not find a word he wasn't familiar with. I looked over the pages and quizzed him on a few that I thought he might not be sure of, but he knew them. I had him read aloud to me, stopping occasionally to ask him about a word here and there. He knew them. We were a little pressed for time today anyway, so I just let the vocab go for today. (I noticed that he has some vocab work to do tomorrow based on his History reading. And I knew he'd balk at the writing in the vocab lesson. )

I'm sure some of you have experienced this. I'd love to know how you've handled it.

I've never done the vocabulary work, so I just checked my guide and saw that is says "Optional phonics or vocabulary work" on some days. I guess since the word "optional" is in there, I've assumed that both the phonics and vocabulary are optional. I might be wrong, though.

If he is reading a book and there are no unfamiliar words to him, then I'm thinking it would be unnecessary to do the vocab. assignment. :D

I hope that helps! :D

Thanks, Heart_Mom! Maybe you're right--maybe they are both optional! Funny that we read that differently. :D Maybe I'll just continue to feel him out on the DITHOR vocab. I think his vocabulary is pretty strong. Thanks for responding!

Good question - those are both optional! :D BHFHG and PHFHG have excellent vocabulary work in history, so if you are doing one of those guides, and your ds does not seem to need the extra vocabulary work in DITHOR, you don't need to have him do the optional DITHOR vocab. As dc get older, there are more unfamiliar vocabulary words in DITHOR. My oldest is in Level 6/7 and has an excellent vocabulary, but he can always find some new words to learn, so your ds will have that ahead of him anyway. HTH! :D
