DITHOR - Is this plan okay?

Post by mamatutu » Fri Jan 27, 2012 3:45 pm

Hello ladies! I'm about 95% sure that we'll be switching from CLE Reading to DITHOR next year, but I do have a quick question. Next year, my dd will be 9 years old and in the 4th grade. She is an advanced reader, but she absolutely *despises* the physical act of handwriting. I think the Level 4/5 Girl Interest Books (http://www.heartofdakota.com/DITHOR45-girls-pack.php)would be a great fit for her. However, I'm hesitant to put her in the Student Workbook for Level 4/5 because I'm afraid it will require too much handwriting.

Soooo ... if this were your child, would you use the Level 4/5 books with the Level 2/3 Student Workbook? (Is that even possible??) And for those of you who have used/are currently using the Level 4/5 Student Workbook, would you say it requires a lot of handwriting on the student's part, or would she be okay? I would appreciate any words of wisdom!

Thanks, ladies! :)

And just to clarify ... the "plan" I'm asking about is using the Level 4/5 books with the Level 2/3 Student Workbook. :)

I think your plan sounds great! :D It is exactly what I would have advised. When dc come to DITHOR that are 9 or 10 yo, we often advise this very combination. This will work well to teach the writing skills in DITHOR, while still meeting your dd's reading level with the 4/5 girl pack. You will just be following the 2/3 section of the DITHOR Teacher's Guide. We have used DITHOR for so long, I almost cannot remember not using it. We love it still! I just posted about it in the weekly check-in a week or so ago, and have many other posts singing its praises as well. I'd not teach reading any other way. Enjoy - I think you have chosen the right placement! :D

I have a 7 year old that can read easily on the 4/5 level but writing is a little tougher than reading for her. I let her pick as high a level as she can comfortably read but she uses 2/3 DITHR. It works wonderfully. Your plan sounds great! :D
