Question on Preparing and Level 3 LA, etc

Another ? from me today! My ds is currently doing Preparing (he is 9, 10 in April, so technically a 4th grader). He is doing Level 3 LA (Beginning Wisely), Level 3 dictation, and I started him out on Singapore Math 2A/2B (but he finished by New Years and I ended up getting a Spectrum Math grade 4 book for him at Staples, which he is currently working on). My question is, if I am to move him along to CTC starting next fall, would he be ready?? Or am I able to order Level 4 LA, level 4 dictation, etc? I guess I just worry about that curriculum being over his head, even though he seems to be doing fairly well with becoming more independent, understanding what he needs to do (with direction from me, some days more than others) Thank you!

If you are going through Preparing with him and he is doing the independent parts well, he will be well-prepared for CTC when he is done with Preparing :) As for math, there is no reason you couldn't begin Singapore 3A right now, as it is scheduled in the appendix of Preparing-just let him keep moving forward at his pace :) CTC has plans in the appendix for Singapore 3, 4, and 5. Also the same applies for the Rod and Staff Grammar, as you have a choice of level 4 or 5 scheduled at half-speed in the daily plans. CTC has levels 3, 4, and 5 dictation to choose from. It sounds as though he is making steady progress :D I hope that helps!

Ok, I guess I forget that HOD really is tailored to their level, so I will not stress about it. Thank you for your reply! He does do the independent parts on his own for the most part, now some days he needs more direction and guidance than others. But he's gotten so much better than when we first started with hs'ing 5 mo. ago, and that is good progress for him I believe. I wish I would have just ordered the Singapore Math 3, as I did not, and got a 4th grade math book on my own. What would u suggest for math for next yr. (I want to stay with singapore, just was kind of rushed with getting him another Math program as it was over Christmas break and snuck up on me). I was thinking if he did well with this program, start on Sing. math 5, but if he struggles maybe Sing. 4? Since we skippped 3? Hmmmm....

It might be difficult to go straight to Singapore 5, since Singapore is so different from other programs...if you are planning to just finish what you have for the rest of this school year rather than do any Singapore math right now, I would give him the placement test (free on the Singapore website) once he is done with what you have, so that you can find the right Singapore level to start him in the fall.

Thats why I ended up buying the grade 4 math at Staples, b/c it seemed the Level 2 Sing. was more level 3 of the Math book at Staples I was looking at. So he is more on a level 3 still, so maybe 4 for next year. Thank you for the info, I will def. have him take the test.

Great advice by Lourdes! Even being a semester off in placement with Singapore can make a difference. I should know - I accidentally started my oldest ds a semester ahead of where he left off the year before in Singapore math, and I could tell something was way off. He does so well with math, and was having a harder time. Once I realized my error and put him in the Textbook/Workbook that he should have been doing next, everything was back to working well. :D Singapore is considered advanced, so I'm not surprised at what you found with the levels of books in comparison. HTH! :D
