New and Math Question

Hi everyone! I'm Ashley. I'm a SAHM to dd 4.5, ds 2, and dd 7 weeks.I'm planning to start LHFHG sometime late summer/early fall with my oldest. (She'll be 5 in September.) We printed out and tried the first week of both LHTH and LHFHG and she liked both, but I think we'll save LHTH for when our 2 littlest ones are a little older. Anyway, here's my question. We're already doing RS Math. I know that the lesson plans are written for use with Singapore, but we really like the hands on/game approach with Right Start (even though it's rediculously expensive). So.... has anyone used a different math program and it go smoothly. I was just wondering about others' experiences.

Also, I just have to say, I can't wait to order and start LHFHG!!! I've looked at so much that's out there. We had been doing five in a row, but it was just too much for me to plan. I liked the looks of some others, but they were so expensive! I had almost decided on Ambleside for 1st grade, but then I found HOD and loved it instantly. I made my dh look over the site with me and I told him that this is just what I thought Kinder. should look like! He agreed. So we're sold. :D I hope to order in the next couple of days!

We use MUS AND ABeka math... because my son needs lots of review. We do the MUS for 34 weeks of the year and the ABeka the rest of the year.
It hasn't mattered at all that we are not doing Singapore. Although I have seen an occasional math activity that looked fun. ;)

Ashley,

Welcome to HOD,very nice to have you here!

Many other moms use a different program than Singapore and have no problems at all. One of the neat things about using HOD is that it is very flexible, accomodating your preferences in certain areas.
So, enjoy continuing on with Rightstart. I know Melanie (another HOD mom) uses RS Math alongside LHFHG. I am sure she will pop-in as well.

If you have anymore questions/concerns let us know!

Candice :D

Hi Mammamo! :D (Does that username mean you live in MO?)

I used RS this year with Little Hearts and it will work for you. I, too, love RS, and I truly feel it is an awesome math program! Some of the activities in the math block will go with RS, you'll just have to look ahead and match up the topics.

I tried to use MUS after RS A, and while I feel that it is a great math program as well, my kiddos balked at the workbook pages (since you use RS, you know that there are almost no worksheets so the redundance of those MUS pages kinda got to 'em.)

I just last week started with Singapore 1A and so far have been very pleased it and, more importantly, my kids are enjoying math again. I plan to purchase the RS games kit to go along with Singapore since the games (for us) were the most fun part of the curriculum. My manipulatives are also getting a good workout as those can be used with any curriculum.

For me, it was a matter of wanting to open up the HOD guides and go for our whole day. I guess I've been slow to come around  b/c I started HOD with RS math and LLATL for phonics/reading. Next year, we will be a total HOD family!! I always try to give new moms that warning, you may become hooked once you start on HOD!!!

Melanie, I'm actually in TX! DD just used to call me "Mommamo," I have no idea why! (She went through a silly playing with words phase right after she turned 2.) I just started using that for my screen name at the time and have stayed with it.

Thanks for the info about RS. I'm already thinking about buying Singapore in the future to be completely HOD and I haven't actually ordered it yet! We'll see. I like the idea of getting the games to use along with Singapore. It's nice to know though that I can use whatever math works for us along with this and it will work just fine. Since I already have RS we'll stick with it for the time being, but we may switch in the future due to covenience and price! RS is incredible, but so expensive!

It must be in the water My DD calls me Mommo all the time :-)... I'm down in TX too

We use MUS my DD didn't get singapore.. She loves the simplicity of the worksheets with nothing to distract her. But I'm still gonna try again with #2 on Singapore cause its such a solid program.

its totally do able with HOD you can stick in any type of math in the math slot..

I am using Little Hearts for K right now and have been using Horizons K for math with my dd who is 5. I just skip the Math box eaxh day and that has worked out just fine for us. I am going to use Beyond for 1st grade in the fall and I plan to stay w/ Horizons because it is working for us right now. HTH!

Well great! It seems a lot of you use other math programs. Glad to know it will work so well. That's what looks so great about this curriculum-it is made so that everything is included, but if you need to substitue something, you can. Oh I just can't wait to order. Maybe this weekend.....

Welcome Mommamo,

I am so glad to meet you  :D I am Mary, Mama to four boys! We used FIAR back in 2000 and loved it. (HOD was not around then or just starting :D )

However, as much as I LOVED FIAR and I am forever thankful to the memories our family created using it, I LOVE the biblical worldview of HOD, the schedule and how it's all inclusive with everything.

I can't wait till you get started! You will LOVE it!

I've been using RS Math too, and plan to continue when we start Beyond this Fall. I've looked at Singapore many times, because it's so popular, but I've started seeing some of the fuits of RS already, so I just can't make the switch. I don't foresee any problems with using my own math. I'll just use that math box on each page to remind me to do math that day.

I also use something else for spelling/phonics (SWR), which I'll continue as well with no problems as we use HOD. We are coming on board with R&S grammar, which isn't scheduled in Beyond though, so we'll just use that LA box as a reminder for that too. No problem though.

hth,

Teresa
