My time is filled with school aged children. My oldest three are in the final stretch of BHFHG and my youngest daughter is in week 3 of LHFHG and loving it.

I have noticed my son, age 4, doesn't know his colors. I've been trying to teach him over the last year, creatively, directly and indirectly, but he doesn't get it. We were on vacation over Christmas break and I asked him what kind of yogurt he wanted. He said the kind that's the color of snow -- so I know he isn't color bind. He knows what color crayons to use to make a realistic looking picture. He just can't say the name of the color.

I haven't officially started him in LHTH yet, because he hasn't shown interest in learning his letters yet. Other wise he is super creative with lego, loves read alouds, and even enjoys listening to his sister's BHFHG history.

Has anyone else experienced this? I don't get why he can't make the connection.

My oldest was the same way, and she still learns stuff that way. She doesn't get it at all, and then all of a sudden she gets it completely. I wouldn't worry about it.

I had the same problem with my DD for a while. She could match colors to themselves, so she obviously could see and distinguish the colors, but she had no idea the names of the colors. I would read to her "a red dog on a blue tree," and ask "what color is this dog?" She actually had no idea that those words were color names, she didn't know how to associate those names with the colors. It's a concept they probably just grasp one day. So then all of a sudden she starts asking me "what color is this?" "What color is this?" She finally got the idea so the other day I saw her exclaiming over something that was yellow, and picking out all the yellow things on a page.

All you can do is keep talking about it, use books, have him group things by color and talk about the color, he will get it eventually.

I think the color pages in LHTH will surely help - they certainly helped my dc. They are fun and have dc looking through magazines to cut out color specific pictures to glue on their papers as they make their color booklet. I am thinking you may just want to start LHTH half-speed. It would alleviate any worrying you may be doing, and it would be easier than trying to come up with other things to do to teach colors. Plus, it's just plain fun! Reading color focused books may help too, but I agree, I think the colors will click for your little one given time. HTH!

Yes, I suppose one day it wil click. I guess it's something I've taken for granted, because my daughters understood the concept without any effort.

Julie, thanks for the reminder about the magazine assignments. Those are fun and I know my son would enjoy the cutting and pasting. I just need to go to the library to pick up some used magazines.
