Extensions: Teaching the Child to write the summary

DS9 is reading the extensions for Bigger and I'm going to have him starting narrating and writing about them a couple times a week. Any tips on how to teach him to do the suggested written summary?

He is more than ready to take on this challenge. He loves the books and has great comprehension.

This is not probably exactly what you're looking for, but I can tell you what I did with my 10 year old son who is doing Bigger with extensions. I pretty much just instructed him to write at least four sentences about what he read. The quality of his written narration has really improved over the weeks! Once he does a few narrations, you might know better how to instruct him!
I'm eager to hear tips from other HOD moms!

Heart Mom,
That is precisely what I planned on doing

. But, I am inexperienced and wonder if there might be more to it.

Did your son write those sentences as a paragraph or as 4 distinct sentences? I am thinking along the lines of the written narrations in Preparing. I may use that as our guide (the instructions in the Preparing guide). My guy is primed for Preparing but I'm trying to combine my boys and so we're hanging out in Bigger. Adding the extension writing will beef it up for him.
Thanks for that encouragement. We'll start there unless someone has some specific tips or instructions for me.

At first it was four distinct sentences, but over time it has become more of a paragraph. He is getting better at remembering to indent the first line!

I recently bought Preparing and noticed the great instruction for doing written narrations in there, but I figure we'll just do that in the Fall when we get to that guide. I've got too much on my plate right now to add it in right now!
I think your son will really enjoy the extensions. My only problem is that they are so engaging that my son wants to read them ahead! I actually let him do this as long as his schoolwork is done, since he is perfectly happy to re-read them when the chapters are officially assigned! (He LOVES
Buffalo Knife and
Bud and Me! I think he's read them both at least two times so far, and he's happy to read them again when we get to them in the extensions schedule!)

Heart Mom,

I love hearing about your son's enthusiasm! My guy loves the reading too although we're not that far into it just yet....
What do you require of your son in the way of extension follow up on a weekly basis? Carrie has a few suggestions including oral narration, paragraph summary, or illustration (perhaps with some writing though I can't recall now). I'd like to hear what other Moms are requiring from their kids, especially the Dudes

.

I do exactly what Carrie recommends for Extensions.
For Days 1 & 3: Oral Narration
For Days 2 & 4: Written Narration
For Day 5: Notebooking Page (which for me is drawing a picture, writing a caption and the book title)
The last picture at this link will show you the form I made up for my son to use for the Extension assignments. (I originally posted this link in conjunction with my copywork questions, but this will give you an idea of what we do.)

I hope this helps!

Heart Mom!! Thank-you very much! Okay, first of all, your boy is so cute! His cuteness comes through in his writing and drawings. I noticed an "I love you!" on the bottom of his Extensions page

. Second of all, your form for completing Extension reading follow-ups is brilliant! Thanks for sharing that with me. I'm going to type up something just like that. It is such a help in directing the child and staying organized!! You have most definitely encouraged and helped in precisely the way that I needed!!

Love your forms! And great idea marking the lines like you did to help him remember to indent . The "I love you!" at the bottom of one is just precious.

Awww, Katrina and Tamara, you are so encouraging to me!

Katrina, I'm so glad that seeing how I'm doing things is helpful to you!
He does not tend to be terribly organized, so I thought that something visual like this would be helpful for him. When he's done each week, we just file each page in a plastic page protector on his History binder. It's worked well so far!
I must admit that I do love his occasional "I love you" on the bottom of his papers!
