I know my dd would fit perfectly into Beyond, but I'm not sure which readers to get. She tries to read everything. She has read from The Beginners Bible and had no problems reading from that. She is currently working through a Magic Tree House book, but I do notice she is missing the bigger words in that book. Is there some sort of instruction that accompanies the Emerging Reader set or is it just a reading schedule? I am kind of leaning toward the Emerging Reader set just to build skills, but I don't want to place her too low either. She will be 7 and considered 2nd grade next year. Which do you think would be the better fit?

Patti

I would second seeing if your library has some of the later emerging reader set. Beyond has a schedule with questions for the emerging reader set. The questions cover things like knowledge of what they read, naration, anylasis - how would the story be different, things like this. The reading sections seem the perfect length and the questions make them think.

Hi Patti!
My dd sounds much like yours. She will be 7 in September (1st grade). I went ahead and ordered DITHOR to go with Beyond. If it is too much for her, I can switch down to the Emergent Readers.
Another thing to consider is how much growth in ability could happen during the four months between now and fall. My dd's skills have skyrocketed in the last four months.

I have to share this.
I totally pegged my son as an emerging reader...
and boy was I wrong!
I totally should have done DITHOR this year.
He is finishing Beyond, he will be 8 in August.
I'd take the time to get a few of the books and see where she is with them. I feel a bit like I "wasted" his year. :S Well, he read tons of other books, but you kwim!

Patti,
I think it's a good idea to start with the Emerging Reader's now. I think the length of the Emerging Reader stage varies from kiddo to kiddo, but I would always rather take my time and cover my bases at that stage than rush into chapter books and find out later they aren't comprehending and are still missing words. It's better to give those little ones all the time they need to emerge!
It would be a good idea to ask some of the questions given in the Beyond... guide too, just to see how she's comprehending.
Blessings,
Carrie
