Coming Full Circle - A Confession ;)

Post by creativemommy » Fri Dec 02, 2011 10:25 pm

Hi Ladies! It's confession time...

We began our homeschooling with HOD two years ago. I LOVED using it. We strayed away from it this year when I began thinking I should combine my two oldest kids (K and 2nd grade). Short story: 2 different types of other popular curriculum used over 4 months = a mess for us. I felt like either my oldest one wasn't challenged enough or that my younger one was missing things. Plus, my youngest one (2yo) was not content to do anything but watch a DVD while the oldest two were doing "school."

So we're HAPPILY coming back to HOD! I told my son the other day and he was jumping around in excitement! Hindsight is always 20/20!

Why did I type this? To hopefully encourage others! :D

We're coming back for these top 3 reasons...

1. HOD really, truly does TRAIN our children's hearts...I GREATLY missed the amazing spiritual discussions we had while using HOD (LHTH, LHFHG, BLHFHG). It was PLANNED in our day, content was at their own comprehension level and God used it to speak to their tender hearts.

2. HOD's guides are really OPEN & GO - which is awesome for this cRaZy Momma!

3. I get amazing one-on-one time with my kids and I know they're learning exactly what they should be learning for their age! (My 2yo plays well with either sibling, so it helps to have one free to play with her while I help the other one with their work.)

I'm so glad it is meeting you and your kids' needs. I am afraid to even try anything else right now... even though having them in different guides doesn't seem ideal, it seems like it will work out pretty well for now, and when they get a little older I may push toward combining again.... by the time I have 4 in school I don't think running 4 guides will be quite as feasible as running 2-3 of these younger guides will be.

Welcome back - missed ya! :D That grass is greener business can be a disappointment - BTDT with some things in life myself. I'm so glad you are back, and thank you for sharing this because I do think it's helpful to moms as they ponder their own homeschooling!

I am new over here at HOD, and it was encouraging to read your post!

Your reasons are some of the very reasons that I am LOVING our switch to HOD. :D I am only 1 1/2 weeks into this curriculum and I am really enjoying having my children work at their own levels, just like you said. It is very nice to feel like my ds6 is getting what he needs, rather than tagging along and not learning what he needs for first grade. It is also really nice to be able to work one on one with one of them while the other 3 play. It has taken a lot of stress off my day to not have to try and occupy 1 while dragging 2 along in a curriculum too old for them while also not meeting my oldest needs. I also really LOVE the prayer and discussions that have even taken place in the first week, and they are still having fun joining into some of the activities together without trying to make their whole day at one of their levels. Such a blessing. I could really relate to your reasons for return :D , and relate in life to going for greener grass and finding it not so green.

Thank you thank you thank you. I have been looking at something else this week and pondering doing something else for K for my son next year then moving them both to something they could do together. I have been encouraged and will stick with HOD. My plan is to use it all the way through.
