HOD's treatment of Ancient History in PH and CTC

Ladies,

Will you please explain what parts of Ancients are covered between PHFHG and CTC? There is a hot discussion happening elsewhere and everyone is confused about HOD's coverage of Ancient History. Is the focus mostly on Israel? Are other civilizations besides Greece and Rome addressed? What specifically does The Story of the Ancient World cover? I see that Diana Waring's materials address other civilizations. The reason I am asking is that there are several Moms concerned that their children will not have a thorough coverage of Ancient History outside of the Biblical history. Is there an intertwining of Biblical history and "other" world history? Clarity is needed. If there is another relevant thread for this topic please link me. That is always so helpful! :D :D

THANKS!

We are finishing up PHFHG and I think the presentation of Ancient History is very balanced. We have covered all the topics that are listed here http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/PHFHG-intro.pdf. Having done a good portion of MFW CTG I find that the coverage of Ancient History is similar.

Looking at my dd's timelinefro PHFHG here is what she has: Creation, The Great Flood, The Tower of Babel, ice Age, Ancient Egypt, Abraham, Hammurabi, Joseph, The Exodus, Shang Dynasty in China, The Fall of Jericho, Trojan War, King David, Solomon Builds the Temple, Ahab becomes King and Elijah begins his ministry, First Olympiad, Founding of Rome, Assyria Conquers Israel, Babylon Conquers Judah, The Fall of Babylon, Confucius and Buddha, The Golden Age of Greece, Esther becomes Queen of Persia, Socrates, Alexander the Great, Hannibal crosses the Alps, Julius Caesar, Birth of Christ, etc....

Of course the focus is history from a Biblical view, so the history study will still be including events described in the Bible. Having been a PS kid myself I think my dd is learning way more than any ancient history I ever learned. She is getting the balanced Biblical view and learning about World History in a way that I wish I had. That is the whole reason we are doing HOD to begin with: learning centered on the Bible, not the World with a little Bible thrown in.

A bright mom,

I'm vaguely remembering this being discussed before. I'll see if I can find it, but hopefully Carrie or Julie will catch this thread and throw in a link. IN the meantime, let me dig a little.... :D

On a personal note, I thought CTC rocked and was a great presentation of ancient history. Maybe not every thing, but it seemed to me to hit the main things. How's that for a totally non-academic response?! :D

Tah dah!:

There may be more, I'll keep looking...

look at Carrie's post regarding Biblical Content in CTC:

I think it's also worth rereading the desctiption from the website of CTC:

Okay - that's it for me. Family time!

Highly interested too !
ETA : I wish there was a Table of contents pdf for CTC as there is one for the other guides. That would really help .

Oh Ladies,

Thank-you for so many GREAT threads to read!! Thanks for the PHFHG timeline. We do have PHFHG (backed up to Bigger and then "paused" for awhile; not sure what is next for my crew).:D I just don't know how PHFHG and CTC compare or overlap. I have heard different reports and don't see a TOC for CTC to compare. I hope to be able to share these with some other Moms who are struggling with their decisions regarding the study of Ancients. Thanks again for linking me!

Ladies,

Is Carrie's description of CTC in the above "quoted" thread accurate? Did those CTC plans come to fruition? If it isn't that then how is it different? I am absolutely crazy about the plans she has laid out there. Wow! Honestly, wow. I am praying about this even tonight. It is how I want to study Ancients and all of the pieces seems so very important.

:D :D

Just wanted to quickly add that I found the TOC for CTC! It's under the 'A Week At a Glance' link for CTC. Hope this helps! :-)

Carrie's plans for the bible study do look like that in CTC with the exception of we didn't do a lapbook for the life of Christ. Having done Preparing and then CTC and now RTR I think the coverage of the Ancient times is very thorough. I read the thread on the other board that you are referring to and noticed that some of the people never finished CTC or they didn't use all the resources. Yes it is heavy in biblical history and that area of the world in the first half. It makes sense because that is where civilization started. The dc really see where all the nations came from and how that connects to the bible. In Story of the Ancient World there are many chapters that are intertwined with the biblical stories that show how all the civilizations are connected. Then they have a strong foundation of understanding for moving into Egyptian, Greek and Roman history and civilization, which I felt was thoroughly covered. For example Greek mythology is touched on and covered, but not dwelt on. I loved that! I would rather my ds have a strong knowledge of biblical history than a strong knowledge of Greek and Roman Mythology. He does know things that he needs to know for future years of lit. study like the story of Romulus and Remus. Also keep in mind that HOD stops and starts in different places in history than some of the other programs. RTR picks up with more of Rome and also really covers groups like the Huns, the Goths and the Mongols.

The other thing I see people doing is only looking at the history spines to see the coverage. You just can't do that with HOD because many other resources used in other boxes complete the picture. You already mentioned Diana Warings's CD,these fill in any gaps that Story of the Ancient World might leave out. The History package storytime books are excellent for also adding to the history component. The geography book is excellent also. It allows dc to see what has become of those ancient lands in the present day and they also can understand why to this day certain nations don't get along. This is why when people choose to leave out some of these things they may end up feeling like there was too much emphasis on Biblical history.

Also keep in mind that this isn't the last time dc will study this time period. Carrie has planned a year in highschool of World History which I imagine will go into more depth of certain things than a guide aimed at this age of dc.

Lynn,

Thank You. What a helpful critique. I love what Carrie has planned and how she weaves things together.

Can you address the concerns about too much "ancients overlap" between PH and CTC? Some have said they have a different feel but I don't know what that means specifically.

There is some overlap between the beginning of Preparing and the beginning of CTC as far as the story of creation and the stories of the Ark etc. You also use an Answers in Genesis book on Dinosaurs in both guides, but the books do cover things at a different depth. Actually in Preparing the Ark story and all that meant for the world is covered very thoroughly and then in CTC it is covered more quickly. Most other things are covered in more depth in CTC. What Preparing did for my ds was what Carrie has said was her intention. It gave my ds hooks to hang future study of the time periods on. Most things were not covered in great depth because it is a sweeping overview of World History. Then when he has gotten to the same time period in one of the manuals after Preparing he has a base knowledge of the time period and is ready to add more blocks to it. This works great for him. He will say "hey I remember this", and then he feels like he is visiting a friend, but this time he gets to know them much better. Hope that makes sense. I have said it before on here, if you only use one guide you really can't see how everything builds on each other and how it flows together. Now heading into my 3rd guide I see the big picture much more clearly.

Lynn,

Thank-you. All of the discussion, both here and "there", solidifies why I chose HOD initially. We continue to pray and ponder and pray and ponder....
