I am new to this forum and have not yet decided to purchase HOD yet but have some questions hopefully someone can answer for me. For a little background, we've used Sonlight for 2 years and MFW the last 3 years. I have loved MFW but do not like one of their history books they use in the upcoming years. (It's not written from a purely Biblical viewpoint, which I want).
1. I love to be involved in my kids' schooling and it seems they would be doing too much work independently. Am I wrong in this assumption?
2. I would still be schooling my two oldest together (11 y. o. boy and 9 y.o. girl). I still love them doing their core subjects together, they just do different levels of math and LA. Is this a problem?
Thank you for answering my questions.
Kelli
a few questions for a newbie
Re: a few questions for a newbie
Welcome to HOD! You will find that HOD is written very much from a Biblical viewpoint.
1. It is true that as you go up in the levels of HOD, the dc take on more independent learning. It still involves the teacher in many ways though in checking over the work, listening to narrations, checking projects, etc. If you wanted to be even more involved than that you could, however as the levels increases the time it would take to read aloud some of the material to your dc would be pretty lengthy so that is a consideration. Again, however, it would be up to you how much you would choose to do.
2. It sounds like with the ages of your dc, you would easily be able to combine. You can take a look at the placement chart to see where they each fall: http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php With HOD, typically you would choose the level that your youngest places and then add the extensions for the older. Unless your dc place a lot higher, a good place to start might be with Preparing Hearts for His Glory. It would be a guide that would probably be at the level for your dd and your ds could add the extensions. This is one of the first guides that starts guiding dc into independent work so you would be working along side your dc for much of the work as they take on small parts independently. You could get a feeling for what it is like to let go of some of the work of teaching with this guide and see how you feel about your dc working independently.
I do understand what you mean about being involved in your dc's education. At first I didn't think I would like for them to take over things and work more independently, but as we've continued to move through the levels, I've seen how it has benefited them and me. They are ready to assume some of the responsibility in their learning and in the long run I think it is a healthy, natural progression of learning.
