Microscope

Post by psreit » Sun Nov 06, 2011 9:38 pm

I was thinking a microscope would be a good Christmas present for dd. I know she would be fascinated with it. I was wondering if anyone could give me ideas for a good microscope, not much more than $50. I can't spend a lot, but I want to make sure it is something that works decently.

Also, is there anywhere specifically in HOD that a microscope is used? I'm just curious.

Edit: I guess a good one would be a lot more than what I can afford right now, but maybe there is a cheaper one that would work just for fun right now; like looking at bugs, etc. :)

Hi Pam,
We recently did some microscope research for my oldest boy's birthday. I liked this top 10 review:

Hope that helps!

I bought one off of amazon that hooks up to the computer, so you do all of the viewing on the screen. For some reason, the green one was on sale for $18, while the other colors were still normal price. I think they were under $50 to begin with. It got decent reviews, so I bought it. We haven't tried it yet because I'm giving it to the dc for Christmas. I figured for $18 it was definitely worth a try! This was a couple of months ago, so I don't know if they are still on sale or not.

It's a Zorb 35X digital microscope.

ETA: I just checked and the green one is back up to around $40. I don't know if you are wanting something like this or a more traditional microscope, but I wanted to mention it. :)

Thank you both, I will definitely check these out. The review will be a big help, and the digital one sounds interesting. :)

Homeschool buyers co-op has microscopes on a group buy right now. I haven't checked out what they have to offer right now or the prices, but this might be another source for you to check out.
