Can someone explain "whet" to me in this poem? I understand the poem all up to this point, but not understanding the context of this word.
Thanks.

I think it means to give a taste for or whet our appetite for the real blue that we'll see in heaven. As I read that poem I was reminded of the verse in 1 Corinthians 13:12, "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." I don't if that is what it means but that is the impression I got when reading through it.

That is what I thought as well - that "whet" only gives us a bit of sky, a tiny smidgeon of blue, compared to that bounty of blue sky which heaven has to offer. I love how poetry stretches the imagination and how personal reflection can bring different conclusions. I don't know if one can be "right" when it comes to understanding poetry, unless an in-depth interview with the poet could be conducted - and even then - I wonder if the poet would rather we made our own connections, and responded to his/her words in our own personal way. I think that this is the highest compliment to a poet - that words are pondered, questioned, reflected upon, and just maybe - remembered. I like to think Robert Frost would enjoy this discussion, but who knows, I guess that's just my thought. Excellent question, and may poetry continue to make us read and reread, consider and contemplate, reflect and respond.
In Christ,
Julie

Boy Julie. I guess I have a lot to learn.

Are you Greek? Ha...just kidding.
I've never really thought to ponder a poem. I think it's ps at it's best. In fact, I remember nothing about poetry. Your thoughts are inspiring.

You are too funny - nope, not Greek!

I was in a deep thinking mood the day I answered this post.

I do love how poetry can effect me emotionally though. I wish I could write it, but I think I'm still too stuck on the "everything must rhyme" mentality I learned about poetry in school. I end up with a lot of "The cat sat on the mat" type stuff.

So, I guess I'm a bit in awe of those who can put pen to paper and really write excellent poetry. Have a great weekend!
In Christ,
Julie

I love this thread.

Isn't the best education you get as an adult HOD! All the little cultural gaps I missed are constantly being filled in as I do HOD with my kids. I often feel like I would just love to read all the books that are not read aloud and do all the activities too. But I just can't find anyone to cook and clean for me so I can do that and all the mommy stuff. It would be nice though.

Ha! I know what you mean. I enjoy writing the guides for me as much as for the kiddos.

Carrie

I agree! I was just looking through what the dc are going to be doing this week for their independent history and science and wondering if I could manage to do it as well.

I had really hoped to do the independent things over the summer, but I didn't get it done. So far I haven't found the time to do the activities myself during the school year. All of those other mommy duties get in the way.

Oh well, I'm getting a great education with what we do together!
