Geography

Post by VRR » Sat Oct 22, 2011 7:26 pm

I am considering using LHFHG for my now 4 year old next year and I like what I see. I was wondering if or how Geography is incorporated into the curriculum or if I have to provided additional resources.

Welcome to HOD! We're glad to have you here. :D I'll move your question over to the Main Board where more moms will see it. All new posts begin on the Main Board. :D

Welcome to the HOD Board, and yes, Geography is incorporated into HOD's guides. In fact, the way it is incorporated is one of my favorite ways to teach geography. It is tied to the history, so it is always relevant to what we are learning. It also increases in difficulty from year to year. Maps are used as resources for other activities as well, such as the history projects, or the art projects. So, geography is not a separate subject taught in isolation, but rather an extension of the history theme. I feel it has helped our dc understand the impact geography has upon people, events, and history. It also helps them better retain what they have learned and realize the world is both a changing and a constant place to live. :D Geography as a specific skill focus begins in Beyond Little Hearts. This worked well as after doing the one year sweep of history in LHFHG, my dc had a better handle on understanding history in general within a world context, which then in turn helped them better understand geographical implications within history. HTH! :D

Dear Julie,

thank you for your thorough answer. It looks like HOD covers everything you need to give your children a well rounded education. I am so excited to get started, I may just have to start earlier than planned!

Thanks again!
