Need Ideas for Allergen Free Medieval Feast

Post by doubleportion » Tue Oct 04, 2011 1:59 pm

I need some ideas of what to plan for our Medieval Feast in PHFHG Unit 25, so that our whole family can be a part. We are currently eating grain free, dairy free, sugar free, legume and soy free. I thought I could make the trenchers out of an allowed flour and just not let them get so stale. We use coconut flour or almond flour to bake with. I thought of meatballs and maybe apples and dried fruit. I sure could use some suggestions on this one. I'm glad I looked ahead for next week or I would have been reeling as I tried to wing it. I only sweeten things with honey or date sugar. Could I make an apple pie? Would that be Medieval fare? Other ideas?

Edie,

I think all your ideas sound great! Here are our pictures from our Medieval Feast: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=5939#p43729

I made a roast in the crock pot for our meat (at Grant's request). That was super easy. You would want to skip the cheese. Then we had a fruit platter. I'm sure you could do that. Instead of peas maybe you could make some green beans or something?

For the trenchers, I'm sure you could give it a try with your flour that you use for baking. Or, if you're not really planning to eat them, maybe make them with plain old flour? (We fed ours to the dogs. ) Would it cause allergy issues to eat on them even if you don't eat them? I'm guessing your special flours are quite a bit more expensive, but then again buying some "normal" flour when you won't use it for anything else wouldn't be real cheap either.

Have fun! We loved our medieval feast!

Thanks, ladies! That gives me some food for thought. I have the rest of this week to come up with a plan.

We couldn't eat off of them if they were made out of wheat flour; and, yes, I hate to waste my precious special flour. We may make something that looks like trenchers out of non-food item and use that instead. I'll have to think about that one.

What we do as Mom's when we homeschool!
