Dough suggestions, Rev to Rev

My dd carefully followed the instructions for the pueblo pottery dough in unit 2 (I watched), but the dough was way too sticky. Even after adding more flour, it would not hold a shape the next day when she tried to make a pot. I wonder if it has to do with our high altitude- I always have to adjust baking recipes...
Anyway, any suggestions for a baking clay or dough we can substitute?

Wyatt's was somewhat sticky too, but then he realized he had read the amount of oil incorrectly and put in too much. :D We added a bunch more flour, and it turned out like this...

It definitely could be the altitude though as well, but you could try adding a bunch more flour until it is more pliable and able to stand up better. I always think that things that don't turn out can provide good life lessons too. In Wyatt's case, he'll probably read the directions more carefully. In your dd's, she'll maybe just learn that sometimes, even following directions carefully can result in something not turning out (not a bad thing for a gal to learn before she begins cooking for a family of her own someday, based on my findings  ). I know this isn't all that helpful, but it did turn out for Wyatt with more flour (and less altitude). Sorry I can't be of more help!

In Christ,
Julie

Thanks for the picture :) Well I will have her try adding yet more flour-we still have the dough she made-and see if that works. I'll let you know!

Our clays NEVER seem to come out right - even when we follow it to the letter - and we've been at HOD for a few years now. I gave up and use air dry clay a lot of the times. I don't know if it is our humidity or what. Other people seem to have great results, so I would think altitude could have an effect.

That's funny. We've had a lot of trouble too. The first time the clay just got wetter and wetter and water droplets even formed on it. I think the humidity was way too high. We put it outside in the sun and the chickens ended up eating it. :D

Next time, I decided to bake it in the oven to avoid the chicken problem. I must have had the temperature too high because it puffed way up. Hopefully, we'll get it right some day.
