Help learning multiplication and division facts.

Post by faith0428 » Wed Sep 21, 2011 2:11 pm

My daughters are both struggling with remembering their multiplication and division facts. Any suggestions on how to help them remember other than flash cards? Maybe computer games you know of that have helped your child learn? I'm really just not sure what to do. Thank you!

Skip counting memorization as a bridge and Rapid Recall is working for us :-)

bigiqkids.com has a Math facts section, and you can sign up for the free service. It's really great. I've heard times tables is really good, too, but I've never tried it.

*Edited to fix that first website. :)

Have you ever tried the multiplication songs from audio memory by Kathy Troxel? They are great.

There's a free download we use that my kids LOVE called TimezAttack. VERY effective. I also have a DVD I use that helps my visual learner with stories for the facts... don't think I can link it directly from here, but you can find it on my blog on the math tab which is linked to the right if you click the little world globe.

We use a mix of Calculadder, Hot Dots Flash Cards (these are self-checking with a special pen), and Jumpstart's Study Helpers Math Booster cd-rom. We don't do all 3 every day. The Hot Dots are scheduled for 5 minutes with a timer during our math lesson time. We do it at the beginning. Since I am not needed to check them on this, they get to math on their schedule and set a 5 min. timer. I use the calculadder drills to make sure they know the facts before moving to the next fact family with the hot dots. We normally work on one family all week and then do a calculadder drill on Friday.
The jumpstart cd is just one of their many choices during computer time. They also have typing, spelling, and other fun games to play. These are games though and I don't stress them or check their progress on them. It is just fun computer time for them.
I agree with Carrie about waiting until 3rd grade and getting through the math program to stress the facts. That is what I have done with my girls and they really only needed to work on a few families that were giving them trouble. We are only adding 5 min. to our math time this way and neither hot dots or calculadder require my attention. The kids work on them independently.

I second the multiplication songs! We tried the flashcards and they just did not work for my very auditory dd. The songs have really helped her to remember those facts like she needed to. You can always try homemade flashcards first, since that is the least expensive way. I found when I was young, and being a visual learner myself, that simply writing and rewriting those things I needed to memorize worked for me. Sometimes it is a matter of finding what learning style clicks the best with your dc.

Just my two cents.
