dictation?

Post by wdworkman » Fri Apr 25, 2008 9:11 am

Could someone please explain how dictation is used for spelling? (We'll be using Preparing in the fall.) Does the child correct his mistakes immediately & go on or is it used as a guide for what words to study?

I was thinking that this might be something that we could practice over the summer as I wait unpatiently for the guide!

when we do dictation I let her study the passage before hand. Then I dictate it to her once. she has to write it down with correct spelling and grammar. Which unless she forgets the period. She always get right. This builds such confidence in my child. Tho if you dc is getting it wrong you want to correct the error as soon as possible.

But I find now I can dictate to my dd, her bible verses and she can write them down and she is recognizing when she is spelling some thing wrong, and is now asking for help.

I was reading a article on spelling in children. It stressed, teaching how to recognize when a world is spelled wrong. Then a child can play with the word till they get it right. I see dictation as a life skill.
Think about it what is college? or work place but listening to lectures or meetings and retaining the information by taking notes. :)

EDIT:
ROFL as i re read this I'm noticing I'm not using captial letters adn I made plenty of speling errors.. rofl I'll leave you with some..

I am just really starting to do this. I think it really helps with spelling. Warning first though: I have no idea what I am doing! I use it now a lot with my dd who is reading delayed. I actually compose sentences for her that contain spelling rules we are trying to learn. I try to make the silly and fun for this purpose. She tries to write it. Then I show her the correct spelling and go over why the word is spelled that way. She writes the word ten times and makes an index card of the sentences and the spelling words. Then next day we try either the sentences again or new ones that use the misspelled words for the previous day. Disclaimer is that my dd has cerebral palsy and and needs lots of repetition.

My other kids we are starting to do it with other things like the McGuffey Readers. I dictate it. They write and then I let them know if there are mistakes. They try to correct it on their own to account for careless mistakes vs what they actually know. Then they check it in the book and recopy the entire thing correctly. Not sure on that one yet. But just wanted to try something outside the program first because they will not allow me to skip any part of HOD  so I wanted to test it out before we incorporated it. I will move to the poetry in HOD soon and the Bible verses. I am starting to believe all this CM stuff really works.

Janet,

I'll link you to a similar thread that will really help! Link:

You won't have to come up with your own passages for dictation, however, as "Preparing.." will supply 3 levels of passages.

:D Blessings,
Carrie
