Adding to HOD?

Post by alydar » Thu Aug 18, 2011 2:53 pm

I was just wondering if anyone adds anything additional to the HOD schedule like a nature study for example. :)

eta: or any other curricula in any area. :)

I'm adding in a little extra art/copywork from Draw*Write*Now. I have books 1, 2, 3, and 5. Art is an area my girls love and I'm quite deficient in. I like the simple lessons and many work in well with the History in Beyond. I plan on doing maybe one a week or so where she practices making the object step by step and by the end of the week can draw the object and do the copy work in her notebook. I try to expand a bit further with the teaching tip idea in the back or with something I notice. Like how you can tell what direction the boat is moving by how the sail and flags are drawn, etc. It seems to fit her skill level well and she has been successful with the few we've tried so far. Some are more complicated than others so I'm trying to stick with simpiler ones to start with.

I think the Art in Beyond is fine as it is. This is just something a little extra I thought she'd enjoy and covers a spot I'm not as comfortable in. In small amounts it should be fun without adding too much on. And it helps keep her busy when I'm tied up with the baby. :)

Mine are still little, but we do regular nature study, listen to classical music by one or two composers at a time to become familiar with them, picture study when I remember, and I am introducing spanish and will start mine in spanish shortly. I don't think anything needs to be added to HOD, and some of them are covered in other guides, but we enjoy these enrichment activities. :D

We have some outside activities...sports, piano lessons and a HS coop. We also added extra poetry and art...they can't get enough arts and crafts! This year I'd like to add music and art appreciation as well. We save the extras for the afternoons when we aren't as busy. I try to fit something extra once or twice a week.

I don't add anything now, but when I had just Wyatt I added a nature study and enjoyed that. :D Just so you know though - a little bird told me there is (probably  ) going to be a nature study in the next guide. :D :D :D
