My 6th grader is doing Preparing with Extensions this year.
Last year we were in a different program, and we used Pedro's Journal as a read aloud. She remembers it...I asked today and she did a good oral retelling.
I was thinking of replacing Pedro's Journal in that section with Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, which she has not read. I, also, have never read it.
Does anyone have an opinion on this? Anyone read both books? Do the activities with Pedro seem like they'd work well with Mr. Bowditch? Anyone?
Thank you,
Rebecca

Re: PHFHG/Pedro's Journal/Carry On, Mr. Bowditch
Not sure this is the correct answer because my Preparing guide is not available and ds used Preparing last year so foggy memory. I was in the same boat having read that book before. I found a substitute for Christopher Columbus as the book is more for that time period reading Columbus by D'Aulaire at the same time as Pedro's Journal. Mr Bowditch (loved it) is a different time period. I found a book that was at my ds's reading level and it was a perfect match because it was a living history book about animals on and around Christopher Columbus' boat. It is not my place to recommend a book so I won't but that is my humble answer to your question. Tammy

Thank you. I had just been looking in the HOD catalog, and thought Carry On, Mr. Bowditch (a reading selection) might have been similar. Thanks for your reply.
