LHFHG, Singapore Math for First Grade

Post by cpresz » Fri Aug 12, 2011 4:01 pm

As I'm writing out my lessons plans for the year, I'm noticing that the Math boxes in LHFHG have activities to go along with the lessons, but it correlates to the Kindergarten Math books.

This is our first year doing HOD and while we didn't do the Kindergarten math book, I know my daughter's ready for the First Grade book.
There is an alternate schedule in the back of the book for which lessons to do with which unit/day, but no activities to go along with the lessons.

Would it be beneficial to purchase the Home Instructor's guides for Books 1A and 1B? Math is definitely not my strong suit and coming up with "games" or activities to do to reinforce the lessons might be difficult for me. Anyone have ideas on this? Or should I bite the bullet and purchase the instructor's guides.
Help!

Many people buy the beyond manual so they would have the activities for 1A and 1B. O

Hello Christan,

Welcome to HOD, I am using LHFHG for the 2nd time around. We love it. Like pp, I highly recommend for you to get the Beyond manual and do the hands-on activities that Carrie has in there, rather than the Textbooks or the HIG. They are extremely helpful and a great hands-on learning tool, using household articles and snacks. I did part of LHFHG last year with the K- options and I am using it this year with first grade options starting Singapore 1A in September.

Many moms do just get the Beyond manual. The hands-on activities are great, and you'll need the Beyond manual next year anyway. They are worth it in my opinion. My oldest ds is now in 5B, and my middle ds in 2B - the hands-on activities HOD provided helped them thrive with Singapore. They helped them first physically work through math problems, so by the time they then had to use mental math, it was a snap. HTH! :D
