We have lots of maps, but the guides often says to use a globe. I've done Bigger and I'm looking through Preparing. Should I buy a globe? I have one that came apart at the center and is taped together, but it's really outdated.

We have both. We use the map more for just pointing to a place, following rivers, etc, plus it's right by his desk. However, I like having the globe for showing where places are in relation to each other. This is esp helpful when they're a great distance from each other, or when they're close but on opposite sides of the earth (like Russia and Alaska). It seems to cement it better in his head.

We use both also. Sometimes the map works better and sometimes the globe does. It just depends on if he is just finding something or if he is tracing a travel route. I like the globe for tracing the travel route. It does seem to help him visualize the distance better.

We use both. I know in later guides the globe is used for map activities but for science also. I would say get an inflatable globe as it is cheaper but you really need the axis tilt that the globe has when studying the earth, days, time zones, and astronomy etc. If looking over the current guide you won't need all of that then use an inflatable globe. Those inflatable globes are fun to play with too. It changes our thinking when we go from flat paper to a round globe of the earth. Our free globe is from 1987 so it is outdated but we then compare with current map and get into further study of history as there are new countries and some countries have divided USSR for example. I recall many experiments using the globe and a flashlight through the years and we just completed Preparing. Tammy

We have a large wall map of the US, one of the World, one globe from Target and 3 inflatable globes. The inflatable globes get the most use. I just wish they were 3 of the same type of globe as my children fight over one in particular. One was a freebie from the library and is very poor, baby gets that one. One has clear oceans and one has blue oceans. They fight over the one with the blue oceans.

I would highly reccomend inflatable globes (but with the blue oceans).

We have both as well and I find a benefit to both. Many things we can't really see large enough on a globe, so then we use a map. But I like how the globe is more relational to the earth. The closeness of the countries in relationship to ours, etc.

We have an actual globe, my friend has an inflatable one. She hasn't had any issues with using the inflatable one, especially at the younger guides.

I picked up a lamp globe at big lots for $9.00 a few years ago...
I also Use google earth
and I have invested in a really good National Geographic Atlas
I have found I use all of them and the lighted globe was such a steal! And it is tilted on the correct axis.
Also If you are a member of AAA You can always get free USA road Maps from them.

another "both" user here. We have a huge world map (actually it is wallpaper). We use that to find things we are having trouble finding on the globe (small places or places I am not familiar with ). But the globe is our main resource because we can get a better vision of where things are in relation to other places. Plus, as someone already said, you see the topical things such as the equator as it relates to the sun, etc.

We have the exact same - only we only had 1 inflatable globe. It did have blue oceans. But it popped after much use. So, depending on the number of BOYS you have, inflatable globes may not last quite as long...

I like to globe for visualizing where things actually are on the earth. But like someone else said, they're sometimes not as detailed as far as having towns placed because of their size.

Where do you find the blow up globes? I have bought some maps, but cant find a globe.

Rainbow Resources, Ebay, and Amazon all have them. I don't know if you can get them in a store.

I was going to say dogs....if my kiddos were bouncing an inflatable globe around, I know our dog would try to get in on the action! Not so sure it would last very long in that atmosphere!

I have a globe that my mom picked up at a yard sale for a couple of bucks. Pretty current as far as I can tell (Russia vs. USSR, etc.). We have liked that especially when doing things with the flash light as the sun. Makes it easier to visualize the suns rays on the earth. Also easier to "see" the rotation of the earth.

We have a large US map as well. That is good while we are reading through history and finding where states are as we read about various people and where they came from. it also has all the state flags along the sides which my kiddos just find neat. I found that the US map has really helped my dd8 start understanding the concept of how large the US is and that it is made of smaller states, still smaller counties, cities and towns. Great to help them "see" how the US continued to add states till it became what it is today.

Next on the list to buy, might be a world map as we start doing world history.

We use both. I have a super old globe that was my older brothers. It's from the mid 70s, so very outdated. I'd really like to get a new one, but its working for right now. Then we have a childrens atlas I picked up at Costco that we look at for more detail.
