I have not read all of the comments here so keep that in mind. Hopefully I'm not just repeating what others have said.
We have always used the book On Becoming Babywise to help get our babies on a schedule and sleeping through the night. You do have to make it work for your family, not being legalistic, but it definitely works. All of our babies were sleeping through the night (most nights) by 3 months, some earlier, and kept getting better from there. I highly recommend the book. It helped us a lot!
But, why not start with just picking a set bed time, if you don't already have one. Then you could decide nap times. My infant is 9 months old and takes 2 naps a day, morning and afternoon. It depends on when she wakes up, but most mornings she goes down by 9-9:15 and gets up at 11-11:15...or I wake her up if she has not awakened by then. That way I have her back down in the afternoons by 1:30 during her toddler-sister's nap time...allowing the rest of us a baby-free period of time each day. And I don't allow them to sleep past 4 p.m.
I'm going to read everyone's comments....maybe I can learn something new....and I'll come back if I think of anything else. You can do it!
