lissiejo- My problem is not that I’m not tough enough on him. I lay down the law, but sometimes I just need to lay off. My problem is that I’m too tough on him most of the time. He is stubborn and strong-willed, but I am too, so that makes for an interesting time! I struggle with the juggling act. The more frustrated and withdrawn he gets, the more frustrated I get. I’ve tried letting him sit at the table or in his room, out of reach of any toys or books or anything, but I swear he would sit there all day long, just out of stubbornness! I know that at least some of that is a maturity issue that will subside as he gets older and also with a routine school day, but some of it is just a discipline issue to deal with. Glad that your daughter realized who was boss and hopefully, soon I will be posting on here that our issues are mainly resolved too!
stawnasalas-That is encouraging… My 5 yr old is my oldest, so he doesn’t have that concept of watching older siblings doing school each day yet. My 2 ½ yr old is all into it, from watching her brother; she’s already wanting to do preschool workbooks and things that are beyond her, so I don’t think I’ll have any trouble with her when school time comes. I’ve been emphasizing to my son that all of his friends who are the same age will be starting school in August and talking about where they will be going and everything so he can get used to the idea that it’s not just him that will be starting a new routine then. Plus, my hubby is a teacher, so after he’s home for the summer, we will have a clearly defined day to begin the school year. Hopefully that will help too.
I took another mom’s advice from here and I’ve really been playing up HoD and telling him how much fun we’re going to have. I’ve been doing more hands-on activities lately, thanks to advice from here and he’s been enjoying it. So, I told him the school we will start in August has a lot of hands-on activities and things to do as opposed to all book-work. He was very relieved to hear that.
5 yr old attitude towards school
Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
Hang in there I struggle with patience too. It can be so hard sometimes. I'm glad he's looking forward to school now! I think it is hard for the oldest sometimes since they don't know what to expect. Have a fabulous year with your sweet son!
