Singapore Math Question...

it looks like the new standards edition combines earlybird 1a/1b and 2a/2b thus the larger size, (plus more practice sheets.) I could use the preschool part for my younger students if they come to like workbooks. I think 2a/b is a better fit for my K ds (the second part of the book, if i understand correctly) but the first part could be useful for littler ones at preschool level.

I can tell you that the updated version of LHFHG won't be available until sometime this summer. As far as the Earlybird Math goes, the current Earlybird Kindergarten edition is $15.00 for the pair of workbooks, making it very economical. Along with the corresponding math plans we've written into LHFHG, it is a complete math program. The LHFHG plans match the Singapore workbook pages/concepts exactly and also make sure to fill-in any missing concepts in the workbook.

The new Standards Edition Kindergarten version is $23.00 per book, making the pair of books $46.00. While they are full color and are thicker, they are not necessarily covering more material. So, we are also looking into an equally well-written more economical Singapore published version for Kindergarten called Essential Math ( which is in black-and-white). Ultimately, we'll end up with the best series for math coverage rather than price or color being the deciding factor.

Could you not use just the Standards B book for Kindergarten? Since it sounds to me like the preschool material is somehow included. I really don't know the break down between A and B. Are you having to rewrite the coordinating activities in the guide?

In talking with one of the authors of the Standards Edition rewrite for K, she said that while Earlybird 1A/1B and 2A/2B are now all together in the new Standards Edition, the material has been rearranged so that similar concepts would be together. So, the new book A isn't just the previous Earlybird 1A/1B and the new book B isn't just the previous Earlybird 2A/2B. The 1A/1B, 2A/2B books are all woven together within the 2 new books.

I need to really dig into the copies of the new edition that I have and just lay it all out to actually see for myself what the changes are and how best to utilize them within our guides. With the original Earlybird 'K' U.S. Edition, we had already gone through and filled in any missing gaps in the Singapore math workbooks to make sure we covered all U.S. standards for 'K' math, so this will be another look at meeting the same goals (through rearranging the content flow and rewriting activities to match).

I must admit I'm dragging my feet on doing this change, as I'm knee-deep in our newest book and am happy with the math as is in LHFHG. Once I get into the project, I'm sure it will be clear as to what should be done, and we'll make sure that in the end the changes are well-planned, provide excellent math coverage, and are easy to teach.

Ok, Candice, I had to bump this up to tell you that I bit the bullet and went ahead and bought EB US edition for our last child, our daughter who is due in March! I got it brand new never used at a really good deal though, so I was able to justify the purchase, lol!

After just scanning through the posts, I want to make sure I get this right... I have ds5 who will start LHFHG in the fall and then at least one more after him. Will the LHFHG guides with the new math lessons be for this coming fall? If so, when will they be available for purchase? (NO rush at all carrie! Just curious!)
Or will it still be the same this fall (meaning I should buy the guide and two SM EB 2A/B sets)?

Thought I'd chime in that I just bought four sets, including for one that is in utero, due the end of May.

You ladies make me feel better. I am about to order 2 sets for my already born children so that I am sure to have them on hand. I also know that Carrie will adjust the Math Exploration accordingly and find a great substitute and that it will work just as well. However I'd rather not have to change what I already know!
