Where should my friend move to?
Re: Where should my friend move to?
Another Texas girl here! I'm also in the Houston area, actually between Galveston and Houston. I'm just starting out with homeschooling myself, but there are a ton of co-ops and support groups here as well. I look forward to joining one or two and meeting other homeschool families in my area!

Okay, now for a question I have to ask (for myself)....how about bugs? Do you have bugs? My brother-in-law lives in TN and he says the TN state bird is the mosquito....so I had to ask. How about natural disasters....hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, tornados, forest fires etc. etc.? How is the health care in your states? Quality of doctors, nurses etc?

Re: Where should my friend move to?
I'm going to 8th Texas.
My girls are even in a home schooling girl scout troop.
yes you live indoors for 3 months of the year when it is super hot. But if you get up early you get nice only warm walks at 6am. And you only get 4-8 weeks of pseudo winter. If you ever lived up north then don't worry about it.. If it snows they cancel everything! even if its only .25 of an inch!! Yes we have tornados and the Dallas area is in a monsoon zone. So we do have a short season of rain but never any flooding. Now the coast suffers from hurricanes
Being in the dallas area I have 3 home schooling support groups to choose from.
we went on 6 homeschool field trips last year, and they all were a blast!
There is even a "friday school" in my community where if, one volunteers to clean or teach, your kids can take all sorts of cool classes. like archery, quilting, bugs!, photography, math help, science.. I know those are more but those are the only ones my friends are teaching.
I have found some of the most excellent health care in the Dallas area, mind you I did have to go looking for it. I never experienced any "were not accepting new patients" from some of the best doctors in Dallas. Now it does cost a bit to live here I had sticker shock on housing moving from upstate NY to Dallas. But since there was no state income tax even tho we took a pay cut going into mission work, there was actually more money in our pay check when it all was said and done.
I'd like to mention the southern friendliness it took me 2 years to get used to it!!!, people in stores will actually talk to you. In NY it was like semi-taboo to speak to a stranger, and down here they will bend over backwards to hepp y'all out. And I can't tell you how many times I've started witnessing to a stranger an they go "Oh sister thanks for reminding me the Lord is in control."
I love it here!

Re: Where should my friend move to?
That is so cool....or hot as you said. LOL. I have been to Dallas, TX once when I was a Mary Kay consultant I went to Seminar down there. It was hot and I saw people in jeans so i thought these folks must be used to this weather. Then when we went to a restaurant I saw the biggest sink I have ever seen - I know they say things are BIG in Texas, but this could have been a bird bath! I did get confused because the knobs on the sink turned backwards. It was a nice experience to visit there though. Just wish I could transport it to NY.
