It sounds like you have a good plan for your kids and 6 weeks or so off school will not hurt them any. It's always nice to have some time that just feels like summer, with fewer responsibilities and more enjoyment of even the learning you do.
Of course, I have taken on projects for the summer too. Right now I am getting ready to paint the dining room and kitchen, rearrange a bunch of things in the rest of the house, and there is always the bedroom migration that happens when you are expecting a new baby.
