When I read storytime books I allow my two younger ones to play quietly nearby (legos, etc.) or find a coloring/activity book that can relate.
(Such as an animal book if it's about animals).
My older dc and I sit on one of our basement couches, with them just out of his sight. That contributes to more peace in our home.
If he doesn't see them he is less distracted, and if they don't see him readily they are quieter.
Neither one can sit still for very long. I also allow them to quietly 'act out' the story.
This is what we do. Hope you can get some good ideas.

Re: Read aloud - how do you choose?
I just wanted to come back to this thread and add how much I appreciate HOD's book choices and story time titles! I had considered trying to combine my 3 kids in some way for Storytime, and cutting down on my time commitment reading aloud 3 different ones, but have decided I'm going to keep doing all of them.

. I just could not get anything productive done until I had my youngest a little more under control. That's been a great success, I think-we shall see when we get back to our normal routine on Monday, I guess
. Anyway, during our break we've been reading some stories, and one in particular, was a Scholastic choice highly touted by the public school teacher of our nephew, and the librarian. We read it, and, wow, I really came away with a huge appreciation for the book recommendations given by HOD! There was just no comparison! Thanks, Carrie!
