Will HOD carry us through HS?

Post by MamaKim » Mon Jul 01, 2013 8:56 am

Forgive me if this has been asked before, I promise I tried to make good use of the search function.

This is our first year with HOD.

I will have a 7th grader and according to placements it looks like she should start with Resurrection t Reformation. I'm a little uneasy, because my gut tells me that she should start with CtC simply to work through the full cycle. I bought full curriculum for 4 children at the convention with lots of help from Christine(?), but I'm still so nervous about how it's set up. Is it okay to plop my oldest in the middle of a cycle like this, or should I have purchased CtC with extensions? She turns 12 in October, and is an INCREDIBLY strong reader and writer...

Also, my greatest concern is how far this will take my oldest. If she's 7th this year, and does Revival for 8th, and Mission for 9th, where do we go next?

I'm completely nerved up. Forgive me my panic

My youngest is starting K with Little Hearts, and then my 2nd and 4th graders will work through Bigger hearts...

The good news is HOD is producing four high school guides with the first to come out this fall. You can click on the geography guide link on the right side from the home page to see some of the highlights (https://www.heartofdakota.com/). You can also find the scope and sequence for the guides, including high school here, https://www.heartofdakota.com/scope.php.
I am not the best one to answer where your daughter should go as my boys are younger, but you can look at the placement chart here https://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php and that should help you. The boxes at the top of the chart are most important, then you will see there are boxes for additional consideration. A child coming to HOD for the first time that lands in the middle of two guides generally should be placed in the lower guide. It will be more important to have her placed appropriately for her skills than where you start her in the history cycle. Maybe others can chime in on placement and if you can share where she places that will help figure out where should would best fit.

Well, she's an 11 year old that will turn 12 in October. She's a VERY strong reader. We are using our own math curriculum (she has a thing for LifePac math. She loves completing each workbook)..

I *think* she will fit in well with RtR.. I've spent the last couple hours setting up our cubbies with each child's books and whatnot. I'm just a bit overwhelmed having four (and a baby). Gaaaaah..

Now my 9 year old is melting down about sharing a curriculum with the 7 year old. :(

If she places strongly in RTR then you will be fine to start there. As countrymom said it is more important to look at where she places skill wise verses If she has never done written narration there will be a bit of a learning curve with that, but the instructions are in the appendix of the guide as to how to do written narration. The high school guide coming out after the World Geography guide will be a World History guide so she would get some of the ancient history then.

The best news is, It's not a cycle!! It's a start where you're you it set. If you were using it to pace grade level, RTR would be 7th grade! My son is doing CTC for 5th grade. Do you remember if you looked at the HS set at the convention? I did, and I think I might have squealed out loud lol. It is going to be AMAZING! Congrats and best wishes on your HOD journey! This is the best educational decision we've ever made.
