Reason #2 to use HOD - Writing Instruction

Post by Tiffini » Mon Apr 08, 2013 1:09 pm

When I was at the HOD booth at the convention, I had opportunity to speak with several different people who were looking at HOD for the first time. Carrie, Mike, and Julie were VERY busy the whole time (yay for new HOD customers! :D ) which left me opportunity to talk to some people and share my experiences using HOD for the past 5 years.

One thing that became apparent to me as I explained some of the program, is how much I LOVE the writing aspect! I didn't realize it until I explained it to others. (Hmmmm, the Charlotte Mason method at work!) :D Writing is such a scary subject for many moms to teach and so it is often avoided or not done well. I am one of those moms! I have always been afraid of teaching writing and dreaded it. Especially because you always hear that is the one area that homeschoolers do poorly and are unprepared for college, etc.

Carrie's system of teaching writing is so gentle and so easy to execute! It is little by little by little, each year adding a new layer. The kids don't even realize that they are learning to write. In fact, my 12 year old said to me last week that she had gotten out her old notebook and looked at it and she couldn't believe how much better her writing is now! This is NOT because I am a good writing teacher. It is because she has had CONSISTENT, purposeful, gentle, non-overwhelming, writing instruction every year. :D

For the gal asking about Sonlight vs. HOD recently, this is definitely a reason to consider HOD. I always thought SL gave writing assignments, but very little instruction in how to carry them out. HOD gives you straightforward, scheduled instruction that is never overwhelming and is so doable - thus, it never gets skipped! :) I feel that my kids will be very well-prepared for college level writing. Each year, I am amazed at the progress they make with their writing skills. It's another beautiful thing about HOD! :D

Hi Tiffani,

Noticed your 15 year old in Rev to Rev w/extensions. Is there anything else you've added to the program for him/her?

Thanks,
Shannon

Hi, Shannon,
I just saw your question - sorry it took me so long to answer you! :)
I basically used Carrie's suggestions for beefing up for HS credit.
For Govt., we used Notgrass Govt, but not the entire book. We also used Painless American Govt. and Uncle Eric's Govt. book.
For Music Appreciation, we added readings from The Gift of Music and Spiritual Lives of the Great Composers to correspond with the musicians being studied and she picked two composers to write papers on.
For Lit, we used CLE Lit I interspersed with reading full-length novels. She picked one novel to write a paper on. We also used Analytical Grammar since we were not currently using R&S.

It has been a full year, but a very good one!
