My ds was 10 and it was a perfect fit. It was his first year home from ps and it was a fantastic way to transition him to a more Charlotte Mason Education.

I used with a newly 10 year old and it was a perfect fit. I also used with a 11.5 year old (turned 12 half way through), with extentions, and it was still a perfect fit. (They were not combined, used it in different years). Next kiddo will start it soon at newly 11 and I know it will be a perfect fit

I used it with a 9, 11 and 12 yo (with Extensions). It was PERFECT for my 11yo, a bit "light" for my 12yo (even with Extensions) but he isn't the "needs to be challenged" type anyway, lol. It was too much for my 9yo...too much writing, reading, etc. But he has some learning issues (mostly with writing and stamina to do schoolwork). I will be using it again in 2 year with my advanced 7yo (she will be 9 when we start it) and my less-advanced 10yo (he will be 11 turning 12 mid year when we start). We will likely use the Extensions as read-alouds unless his reading improves drastically btwn now and then. :/ I feel the rest of the program will be perfect for him.

I used it with my oldest when he was 8-9 yo, and it fit him perfectly! I used it with my middle ds from 9-10 yo, and that fit him perfectly! I think it just depends on the child. The difference between my 2 sons was their writing ability (even just the amount of physical writing each could do as opposed to the creativity of their writing), their time management skills, their ability to follow a short set of directions in order carefully, and the amount of creativity they wanted to put into the more artistic parts of their work (i.e. the details of drawings, coloring, and project creativeness). Their reading abilities were very similar, but I believe that is a consideration as well, as in PHFHG dc should be reading the Independent Reading Deluxe books and the Science books on their own. HTH - fun vote!

My ds is using it right now and will be 9 the entire time. It is perfect for him. I didn't vote because I wasn't sure which one to choose.

We used Preparing over a two year period. My son was 12-13 y/o and my daughter was 10-11 y/o. Loved it.
Re: If you've used Preparing, please vote!
Grant was 9 the entire year we used Preparing...(so I couldn't really vote). Allison will also be 9 the entire year she uses Preparing this next year. My kids have late spring birthdays, so their age changes after we finish our school year.

We are doing Preparing now with both my dc. My dc both have late Spring/early summer b-days, so they too turn a certain age and stay that age the whole school year as well. My ds was and is 10 and my dd was and is still 8. It has worked well for both of them. My dd sometimes takes a little longer as I don't think she writes as fast as ds, but she writes neater and she colors neater as well. Not that ds is sloppy, but she's a bit of a perfectionist in both these areas.

I've use PHFHG with a 7th grader, a 6th grader, and a 5th grader. It was a great guide for each child for very different reasons. I personally LOVE IT because of the World History focus. It does such a great job of providing an overview.
With Joy!

Re: If you've used Preparing, please vote!
A million thanks for this post. This year was our first using HOD. I met Carrie and Julie at the homeschool convention in Arlington, TX last spring. I really wanted to combine my two girls as they are great friends and want to do everything together. I felt like my oldest daughter was a little weak in language arts and definitely weak in math and needed a year to get up to speed.(my girls were 9 (4th grade) and 7 (2nd grade) at the beginning of our school year) Anyhow I worked with Carrie and she came upon a plan that has fit well for us. My daughters are combined in Beyond..with the oldest doing the right side of Bigger, and DITHOR. By the time my girls get to Preparing they will be 11 and 9.(well, I guess my 10 year old will be doing dictation from Preparing when we start our new school year in the fall) I have been reading all the placement posts that have come along recently, and it has really been worrying me that I would have an 11 year old in Preparing when it seems like a lot of kids do it at a younger age. Anyhow to see all the posts about people doing Preparing with older kids has truly encouraged me....now I just need to let it give me some peace!!!
Thanks for the encouragement!

I don't know how to vote. DS has a summer bday. He was 9 when we started and will still be 9 when we finish. It is a perfect fit for him.
