DITHOR guide and books question

I have 2 kiddos who I am just going to start on the same Readers level. My daughter is an advanced reader, while my son struggles some. They will be 4th and 6th grade, but I thought I'd have them start with the level 3 book pack even if they can move though it quickly. My question was, will they need the DITHOR 2/3 book because the Readers are level 3? Or are those student books grade specific so I'd get them the 4/5 or the 6/7/8? Or both of them the 4/5? Hope that question makes sense! I'm confused...

The DITHOR Student Books do not go with any certain set of readers. So, some students may be reading Level 4/5 book packs, but doing DITHOR 2/3 Student Books, for example. It is important to choose books that best fit each child's reading level when doing DITHOR. From what you've shared, I'd have your dd and your ds read different books. Your dd, being in the sixth grade and a more advanced reader, would probably need to be reading either the 5/6 Girl Set or the 6/7 Book Set. Your ds, being in the 4th grade and struggling with reading a bit, would probably need to be reading the Level 3 book set. For DITHOR Student Books, your dd would probably do either the 4/5 or the 6/7/8 DITHOR Student Book, depending on how much she is able to write and how much genre study/story elements she has done in the past. Your ds should do DITHOR Student book 2/3 for a year, and then next year he can do the 4/5 Student Book. For both of them, you would use the DITHOR Teacher's Guide. On the "All Levels Together" days, you'd teach them together. On the other days, you'd refer to the 2/3 plans for your ds, and the 4/5 or 6/7/8 plans for dd (depending on which level of Student Book you chose for her). I am hoping this makes sense, but please keep asking questions if it doesn't! HTH!

It is my older -6th grade son- who is more of the struggling reader though, and then my daughter who will be a 4th grader reads at/or above grade level. I was just unsure which book pack to start with because even though the book pack is titled as level 3, it says next to it (3.5-5.1) so the 5.1 part worried me. Doesn't that mean 5th grade, 1st month? So with my daughter going into 4th grade, and son 6th grade, I thought that might be a good starting point?

You are correct 5.1 means fifth grade 1st month.

Sorry I mixed up the two! Thanks for letting me know that, and I am sorry as I am sure my post was confusing. As the pp shared, you are understanding the reading levels exactly! I can understand why you would be thinking about having them use the same readers now. I do think you may want to have your ds use the 4/5 Boy Interest Readers though, and have your dd use the 4/5 Girl Interest Readers instead. Both could use DITHOR 4/5 Student Books, and you could do all of their teaching lessons from the DITHOR guide together. I just think that it will be important for them to be reading different books for your ds's confidence level. In PHFHG, DITHOR is schedule 3 days a week. So, each of your dc would only need 1/2 of the sets this year. You could choose the 4-5 genres you feel they like the best, and then get the girl and boy choices for them. So really, you'd only end up with 8-10 books this way anyway. I am so sorry that I misunderstood who was who - I hope this makes some sense now!
