Question about Emeging Readers.

Post by fullhands_fullheart » Sat Feb 09, 2013 11:17 pm

I am going to be doing Beyond with my 7 yr old pretty soon. I thought he would be good starting with the level 2 books, but after looking more, I think he should maybe do some of the ER books. The first few are to easy though. Is it a pain to somehow start in the middle of the ER set? Does that mess up the Beyond guide or is it separate? I am new to HOD. Thanks!

You can start anywhere. However, we loved reading through the Bible. The Frog and Toad books are quick and fun.

When we started Beyond the ER books were too easy to start with, but I loved the Bible book so we just did the ER schedule but faster. DD was able to read more so as she read we did the questions and things for whatever she read aloud that day. She flew through Frog/Toad, but because it was easy it was fun and it gave us good experience in the questioning. When we finally got to the point that the reading was a bit more challenging, she had so much confidence she was willing to tackle it. No one says reading should always be hard, so embrace the ease and fun of it and just go at a pace that is comfortable for your kids. I think one reason we are having such success in the Bigger curriculum is because of the thought processing that we enjoyed in the Emerging Readers.
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

The Emerging Readers schedule with comprehension questions are listed at the end of the Beyond manual. So, you can start anywhere you feel your child would do best. For my 8 y/o, he really needed to start at the beginning as it did improve his confidence. He can now read books from the 2/3 book list quite well. We plan to start DITHOR next fall.
