I am concerned that I might be too easy on my ds9, 3rd grade, in the R&S English 3 book in the area of writing. (He did R&S English 2 last year)
I tend to do most of it orally. He does very well with it this way.
The part I do have him write is when it assigns sentence writing. Often this will be with a picture, or using a specific pronoun, etc. The thing I am wondering about is even this part I tend to be a little easy on him. If it assigns 6 sentences, like yesterday, I had him do 2 sentences. Today it assigned 4 sentences, and again I had him write 2.
Am I being too easy on him? I want him to be prepared for Preparing writing next year and CTC writing two years from now.
His strengths are: reading, reading comprehension, and math. Notice writing was not one of them. He has never liked pencils, and his handwriting is beautiful at this point; but it took years of love and labor from mom.
Thank you!

R&S English 3 Question?
Re: R&S English 3 Question?
I personally do this approach as well. My dd is in 5th grade, doing R&S 3 with Preparing and I'm also very light on the writing requirements. We often do all the assignment outloud, we write things when it becomes more cumbersome to speak them (like writing sentences with proper quotation puncutation or diagramming), or I assign writing when she has a bad attitude and I think she's needing extra work. I guess I feel like she's getting enough writing with the requirements in the guide for notebooking, dictation, copywork. I don't think you'll need to rely on R&S to prepare your ds for the extra writing of Preparing or CTC. The guide will do that for you!
I know that's lighter on the R&S writing than most people do, but for now that's working for us and we're rolling with it! To me the point is making sure that she understands grammar and she's getting that. I also know that if I added more writing from R&S it would mean other things didn't get done as well, or it would be too easy for me to skip the grammar because of the battle I'd be facing. So, this way grammar happens. She still doesn't like it, but that's okay, there are something we have to do even if they're not fun! Like putting my kids to bed right now and folding laundry...I really need to get off the computer!

Re: R&S English 3 Question?
My daughter is in Preparing using R&S 3. We do about the same here as well. Some lessons are all oral, others with some writing. If I had to break it down, it's about 50/50 oral/written. If it's lighter writing in a lesson, I'll have her do it all on days when there's not writing in everything else she's doing. If it's a bad day (this daughter has a sleep disorder), then even easy stuff is oral OR we postpone the lesson until the next day.

Re: R&S English 3 Question?
The only writing I have my son do in R&S 3 is the diagramming. I don't have him write any of the sentences, so we do less than you! He also hates to write, and it is very laborious for him.

Re: R&S English 3 Question?
Thank you so much ladies! Yes, he does hate writing too. I keep hoping that will change! I did not mention it in my original post, but I also have him write the diagramming. Interestingly, he has been doing the writing in Bigger very willingly and seems to really enjoy it. Our first two weeks into HOD have been a joy.
Thank You!
