Entering into Highschool behind in R&S and extensions

Post by tea&honey » Wed Jan 16, 2013 6:15 pm

This is my 13 yo. dd 2nd year with HOD and 3rd year of homeschool. dd was "behind" in public school, yet has made vast improvements since homeschooling. I have been content with the pace in which she has been learning up until now...midway through 8th grade year and Planning for 9th grade. :? Thus far dd has worked through CTC and half of RTR both without extensions and in Rod and Staff 5. Based on her age she "should" be using the extensions and be finished with Rod and Staff 6 by the end of this school year. This is where I am confused:

1. Can R&S 6 count for highschool credit? Do we skip 6 and move directly into R&S 7?

2. If dd is not ready for extensions in 9th grade how do I make Rev to Rev credit worthy? In our state only 3 credits are required for Social Science. Could I use Rev to Rev and MTMM w/o extensions over two years and count it as 1 credit? Or are the extensions necessary to make it credit worthy still?

3. If she is not ready for extensions should I not consider her a highschooler and hold her back so to say? :(

* We are going to try one of the extension books in an audio book format. She is reading at grade level, but is a slow reader.

One of the reasons I love homeschooling so much is that dd does not have to be labeled "behind" anymore. It has been freeing for both of us to just learn at her pace and enjoy the ride. Planning for highschool has thrown me into a panic...which I know is not of God. I don't tend to worry about "shoulds", but I have fallen prey this time and need some help out of it!

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Jennifer

Your dd is the age of mine. We are in the middle of 8th and getting ready to start MtMM. We are skipping Rev To Rev. We did an academic co-op 2 years ago that got our HOD off schedule, hence starting new things now vs. back in the fall.

My dd preferred the topics/content of MtMM over Rev To Rev. However, part of going right to MtMM in my eyes was getting all of R&S Eng. 6 done in that guide. Then we will immediately move on with the high school Geo. guide for the 2013/2014 9th grade school year. With her age, we won't need extentions. Actually, she won't need extensions in MtMM either (unless we beef things up for high school credit early).

Alternatively, you could always just add another year onto her schooling and go through all the guides as you are now and have her graduate at 19. Or, if you go through part of the summer (or all depending on what you need) then you could do them all (without worry of needing to do extensions) and probably end right on time. We are heavily considering working through our summers. I have a feeling it will just be partial, though, as mommy and I am sure dd will need some type of break.

Those are just a few quick thoughts. There are several high school threads as of late that you might find some good info in. Also looking back at the board index, and clicking the forum board for each guide you are looking at will give you all the info on those guides going as they are and also beefing them up for high school credit.

I'm sure others will have more insight than me. This board is full of great wisdom! :D

I wouldn't skip 6! My ds started late with R&S English (didn't come home until 7th grade and we tried different english for 7th and 8th). He did R&S 6-8 in high school and learned sooooo much. His scores jumped from nearly unacceptable to excellent. Along with the other english/language arts type things he did, I felt it was all very high school credit worthy.

Jennifer,

I only have a moment but I wanted to pop-in and assures you that R & S English 6 will be fine for high school as part of the lit./comp. credit, so you have no worries there! Some families actually stop after English 6 and just apply that knowledge to their child's comp. work throughout high school. We feel it is better to keep steadily moving through the R & S to keep it fresh throughout high school though! So, steadily keeping on with R & S no matter where your child is as she enters high school is a great plan! :D

As far as Rev2Rev goes, even without the extensions there is plenty there for credit! It is a very solid guide. So, while we would normally encourage kiddos to use the extensions for high school if they are able, it is not a complete deal-breaker for credit. The amount of time and volume of work a child will be putting in to Rev2Rev will definitely count for credit in American history for high school. :D I would always advise that it is better to do the core part of Rev2Rev well than to add on more reading (through the extensions) if the child is not a strong reader. :D

If your daughter is well-placed, I would encourage you to just keep going. We can definitely talk about credits needed and how to award them for her high school plan within the guide sequence you are pursuing. I am just so happy that your daughter is making good progress! You should feel wonderful about that!

If you do plan to use Rev2Rev for high school, you will likely want to look at adding something toward government credit as it goes well with what is there in that area already. This thread may be of help: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8208&p=59715

Blessings,
Carrie
