Interested in HoD and have questions!

Post by texasmom77 » Sat Dec 29, 2012 11:40 pm

Hello!
We are in our first year hs and have a 5th grader and 3rd grader and one who will start K next fall! :) I am ditching SOS after this year and ive been looking at Sonlight and MFW and also at Tapestry of Grace! I heard of HOD and have been browsing the website all evening! Love what I see! I'm thinking I would combine the boys for 6th and 4th grade at Preparing and my youngest with Little Hearts? I was a little confused about how to put your curriculum all together but I'm sure after more reading I can figure it out!
I guess all the subjects including math are all included? Does anyone supplement? I want school to be fun and enjoyable but also I want them to be well prepared for college or whatever they choose to do! Curriculum choices are overwhelming!! :| Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to HOD! Placement is key to HOD curriculum and you will want to use the placement chart found here, http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php.
After several years in HOD I can tell you it is rock solid and above anything your child would get in ps. When you really get into a guide you realize just what all is there. Each guide is jammed packed with skills. Unlike some curriculums, each HOD guide progresses in skill level, which is why correct placement is so important. If you are on the line after looking at the placement chart, it is generally better to go with the lower guide, especially if you are just coming into HOD. To do the full guide you will want everything but the history extension package. This package can be added to beef up a guide for older children. You can choose your own math and English, or you can use the HOD recommendations. Let us know if you have more questions after looking at the placement chart and we will try to guide you.

I looked at the chart and even though my oldest will be 6th grade I feel like Preparing would work good for both boys! Is HOD good for combining or better separate? I prefer to combine if I can to help make it easier. Rethinking for my 4 yr old that maybe LittleHands would be better for her...
so I just go down the line and order each package? I ordered a magazine too so may wait until I get that to order!
THE more I look the more I like about this curriculum! But after such a disappointing year with our current curriculum I just want to make a good choice. Narrowed it down to HOD and MFW...afraid Sonlight might be too much reading for my boys...

I think you will love HOD! I am so excited for you to begin! Here is a 'fill your cup to the brim' thread about why ladies love HOD...

I think I answered your question about PHFHG's resources on another thread, but be sure to keep asking questions until you are set! We love to help here. This board is truly full of amazing Christian ladies that love to help one another. :D As far as your 4 yo, I agree "Little Hands to Heaven" would be a good choice. Starting LHFHG before 5 yo may work, but starting Beyond Little Hearts before 6 yo would not work - looking down the road. If your dd is ready for some of the LA and math in LHFHG, she could easily do that portion along with Little Hands to Heaven and then do the first grade options for LA/math when she uses Little Hearts for His Glory as her core program. Hope that is not confusing - ask more if we can help in any way! You've come to a good place. Looking forward to getting to know you here! :D

In Christ,
Julie
