Dictation formatting question
Dictation formatting question
Sometimes there will be large spaces between the words at the bottom of the dictation piece. For example, todays was:
Ben does not run or
jump. He is too lame.
bump hump lump
dump _____ pump
(I had to add the underline so the formatting of this editor wouldn't push the words together.)
Is it wrong if they write:
dump pump
instead of pushing it over to be underneath lump?
Thanks.

Re: Dictation formatting question
The phrases/sentences are the actual dictation passage.
The words underneath are describe in the instructions by the following:
" Extension words are listed under some passages to dictate to students who are ready for more of a challenge."
I could be wrong, but if that is all the words are, it seems as if it wouldn't matter.
We are just beginning dictation and maybe someone with more experience would say differently.

Re: Dictation formatting question
I agree with Mikki that these are the extra words so their formatting doesn't really matter. Basically they are just a list of extra words so they can be formatted differently than is shown on the page. My dc however, usually wrote them as they were on the page.

Re: Dictation formatting question
After several times asking questions about dictation myself, someone finally told me that the formatting on the page does not matter other than indenting. Other than that it's just the words, spelling, punctuation, etc that matters.
Re: Dictation formatting question
Thank you. That answers my follow up question of if the line breaks in the dictation passage mattered either. Indentations will be the only spacing concern I check for then. Thanks!

Re: Dictation formatting question
I only worry with the indenting and then line breaks for poetry stanzas included in the dictation. Also, with poetry , sometimes some of the lines are more inset than others. Not sure if that matters but I try to have mine take notice of the pattern and recreate it the same. It's poetry...so it seems it should be done exactly.??
i.e.
poetry line one is here and blah blah blah
__this line is not indented but more inset
this one could be here or it could
_____be more like this and be even more inset than the other.
then you could have a skipped line like this
__to start another stanza that isn't indented either. --
_________________________-- then the author is way over here
Poetry has it's flourishes I suppose. And I try to have them copy it with such.

Re: Dictation formatting question
I agree... with the copy work I have them do it exactly as written.
