Hi, all!
We are in Week 7 of Preparing, using it with dd9 and ds11. Ds is doing the extensions, which are mostly history, so I am looking for suggestions to beef up the science portion. My plan is to have him do Apologia's General Science for next year, so I kind of want to get him ready for that jump. I'd like to have his studies coordinate with what we're doing in preparing...........
Thanks ahead of time!

Re: Science extensions for 6th grader in Preparing
Isn't PHFHG a wonderful guide? We have used it twice here and loved it both times. The extensions in PHFHG are history-focused, so I can see why you'd want to add science for a sixth grader. If you aren't doing CTC's science next year, why not do that this year? It covers life science and has a great balance of a variety of books and a variety of follow-us assignments/skills. Here is a little about it, taken from CTC's Introduction ...
This package includes these 6 engaging resources:
• Land Animals of the Sixth Day by Jeannie K. Fulbright
• Birds of the Air by Arabella B. Buckley
• Plant Life in Field and Garden by Arabella B. Buckley
• Exploring the History of Medicine by John Hudson Tiner
• Galen and the Gateway to Medicine by Jeannne Bendick
• An Illustrated Adventure in Human Anatomy by Kate Sweeney
These books provide the focus for this part of the plans. The area of life science is
emphasized. “Science Exploration” topics correspond whenever possible with the
general history topics being studied in the “Learning Through History” part of the
plans.
While students read about God creating the world in history, they learn about God’s
vast animal kingdom in science. While studying God’s plan for human life in
ancient history, they study God’s plan for bird and plant life in nature. While
learning about the history of Rome, they learn about Galen, a doctor of the Roman
Empire. While studying ancient people’s advances in peace, law, and order they
biographically study people’s advances in medicine. Studying science in this
manner allows for natural connections to be made between the two areas.
Each unit includes the following science activities in coordination with the
read-aloud assignments:
Day 1: create a science notebook entry
Day 2: practice oral narration by retelling the science reading
Day 3: write answers to five provided questions based on the science reading –
including scientific terms and Biblical application
Day 4: conduct an experiment related to the reading and log it in a science
notebook or on a copy of the “Science Lab Sheet” found in the Appendix
HTH!

Julie

Re: Science extensions for 6th grader in Preparing
I also have a 6th grader doing extensions in Preparing!
Through no great planning or insight of my own, but just of his own accord, ds has been checking science books out at the library.... experiment type books, just for fun. He has been making gooey stuff in the kitchen, and doing experiments with chicken bones and vinegar (i know...ick!) He also found a copy of a Backyard Scientist book and has just been picking and choosing a few things in his free time that he knew we had the materials for on hand. NOTHING FORMAL, in other words, but just some fun. I didn't want to use the CTC resources just yet, as I hope to use them NEXT year.
