Half speed Storytime

Post by alydar » Mon Oct 22, 2012 6:16 am

How do you do Storytime half-speed (for ex. in Bigger)? Do you do smaller readings everyday? Do you read every other day? Something else? :)

I started out half-speed in Bigger this year, but then decided to complete 3 days/week. At one point, I had thought about doing storytime every day, even if it took me past the day we were on, but I ended up staying with the day we were on. It's not so bad this way now since we are doing 3 days. But with half speed, some weeks you would only have storytime twice. I personally felt like the story was dragging. DD wanted to hear more and staying with guide I waited 2 days to read more. Depending on the length of the book, you could break it up to read a little each day. But, if the readings are short, you could read every day and then read a second book in the same genre. Last year in Beyond going full-speed, there was a book that we finished early, so we ended up reading two in that genre. If I were going half-speed, that would be my choice. I'm sure there are some who just do storytime every other day at half-speed. It is your choice.

We did the storytime every other day and I did the history story on the day we didn't do storytime so he always had a story. That seemed to work well for us.

Thank you for those suggestions. :)

I like the idea of doing Storytime one day and the History story the next. It seems balanced.

But shorter readings also seem doable, too. We're doing Farmer Boy right now and it's a good chunk at one sitting.

I love having choices! :P

We're doing Bigger at about three-fourths speed, and we have Storytime every day because we can't wait to find out what happens next! Then when we reach the end of a Storytime book, we take a break before starting a new one, so we can spend time catching up on History and Science. Hooray for the flexibility of HOD!
