I need some math input please!
My almost 7yo doesn't like math and that's putting it nicely. We just started using HOD and already had been doing math so we are not using Singapore. Math comes easily to him and he retains it well, he just doesn't like it. We used McRuffy for Kinder math and are using CLE now for 1st grade math. I don't know what to do, but know I need to do something because I don't want my child to not like school this early in the game. I guess we need something fun! Any suggestions?
And if I switched to Singapore, how would I know where to start him?

Re: Math Woes
The Singapore website has a placement test to help you place your child in the correct guide. Here is the link http://www.singaporemath.com/Placement_s/12.htm I realize every child and family is different, but we absolutely love Singapore here.
Hope that helps,
Tracy

Re: Math Woes
Well, some children are not going to care for math as well as other subjects no matter what, but I would think Singapore math with its de-emphasis on drilling and all of Carrie's wonderful activities that are written in the guide would certainly help the situation. I would go heavy on the activities and feel free to use manipulatives for everything and see what happens.

It comes so easy to him, I don't understand why he wouldn't like it. I know it is possible, but it doesn't make much sense to me.countrymom wrote:Well, some children are not going to care for math as well as other subjects no matter what, but I would think Singapore math with its de-emphasis on drilling and all of Carrie's wonderful activities that are written in the guide would certainly help the situation. I think he would place in 1A and 1B. I don't see activities in the guide for these. Am I missing them?
How long does 1A and 1B take each day?
Thanks ladies

Re: Math Woes
The activities for 1A/1B are in the Math box of Beyond's plans. The activities Carrie has written are one of the reasons our dc love math! Often times they involve snacks - what's not to love about that?!?
They are always hands-on, short, and fun, with an emphasis on leading dc to visualize the math concept being taught while using their hands to show it in a more tactile way. For boys, hands-on is usually a hit. I'd give him the placement test making sure not to help him at all (as this inflates scores). Dc often score lower than we think they will in Singapore, so it's worth taking the time to be sure about where to start him. Even a semester's difference in placement can make a big difference. HTH!
