I know the consensus is not skipping anything....I like to cover everything as well. In fact, it gives me great anxiety to skip. My son is almost 11. He was a late bloomer. He wasn't able to read books with ease, so we've worked on reading by adding extra work, like tutoring, spelling and reading programs for struggling readers. We've covered the basics side well, but not the "Learning through History" part. In addition, we started Bigger Hearts in late October; therefore, we still have 14 weeks left of BHFHG. My son has greatly improved. He reads independently now, even the story time books and most of his History. Preparing, looks like it fits more with what he needs to do for 5th grade, even though the History is more like 6th grade ( CA)
My reasons for wanting to go ahead and do Preparing:
He's been doing Beginning Wisely, with no problems
On the placement guide he fits with Preparing or CTC.
He needs more writing instruction.
Teacher from charter school, believes and wants for him to do more.
I could do Preparing 4x a week, then do Bigger once a week just for History and Science.
My 3rd grader could do Bigger. All kids are different, but it bothers him. ( we're finishing Beyond with third grader)
He has seen the books, and cannot wait to start.
He wants to have summer off next year.
Reasons not to skip:
He will miss out on wonderful lessons
He will miss on American History. American History is CA 5th grade standards.
14 weeks left...finish or do next guide?
Re: 14 weeks left...finish or do next guide?
So if I understand this correctly you still have units 20-34 to complete.
Looking at these
< He needs more writing instruction>
<Teacher from charter school, believes and wants for him to do more.>
<He has seen the books, and cannot wait to start.>
<He wants to have summer off next year.>
Would he be motivated to do the left side of Bigger and Language Arts box at double speed?
Leave the reading where it is with the tutoring etc. and math at the pace he is going at. Do every other Science day as it is a spiral program and it gets repeated.
If in 7 weeks you were able to finish off the history, then you could start Preparing in Mid October and run it as a 5 day program till he hand made up the lost days.
He would be doing more, getting more writing instruction. It's a compromise.

Yes, unit 20-34. He's capable of going double speed. Thanks for responding. I haven't considered this idea before.
Re: 14 weeks left...finish or do next guide?
I think I would drop Bigger and just go on to Preparing right now, since that's where he's placing.

Re: 14 weeks left...finish or do next guide?
With Beyond we too have 14 weeks left. I had planned to continue through the summer and we did for a while. At the last minute he ended up going with his older sister to stay with his Auntie for a month (they'll be home this week, yay), so there went my plans to finish Beyond.
Anyway, I've decided to go ahead and start Bigger. I know he's ready for it and I'm looking forward to it.
With Lance (8yr.) who still has 20 Units left of Little Hearts, we'll pick-up where we left off.
All that to say, if your dc is ready then go for it
