Drawn into the Heart of Reading

Post by linzjo » Wed Aug 15, 2012 8:52 pm

Hi, we are considering homeschooling this year and I am looking at ordering Creation to Christ for my 10 yr old boy. I'm not quite sure how much I need to buy as far as the Drawn into the Heart of Reading and so forth.

Lindsey,
We loved CTC! It was an exciting year of growth for my son.

As for Drawn into the Heart of Reading (DITHOR), you would need to buy the teacher's guide and the student workbook. I don't know your son's reading level, so I am not sure what level you would need. Then, you can choose to purchase the books pre-selected by HOD for the reading program (appropriate for your child's reading level/age), or you can purchase/use your own books for each genre. Hope I am understanding your question correctly. If not, I am at least bumping you up the board! :D

I can tell you what I did in a similar situation. I am starting my 11 year old boy in CTC this fall. For DITHOR I ordered the teacher's manual, the Level 4-5 student book because we are new to the program, the Book Projects to Send Home for Grade 4 (not required but decided to order after talking to Carrie at a homeschool convention) and then the Level 5/6 boy interest book pack to match his reading level. Hope that helps and that you have a great year!

Welcome to the HOD Board, linzjo! :D The ladies did a super job of answering your question here. Did you get it all figured out now, or did you still have questions about DITHOR? We have used DITHOR many years here, and we still love it! I would not teach reading any other way. The results I have seen with DITHOR have been amazing! My dc have a passion for reading, and also have reading comprehension skills firmly intact. The Godly character studies in DITHOR are priceless. They always seem to come at a time that I need a little help with character traits - they feel like reinforcement for me as a parent. Here is a link where I described why I love DITHOR so much, in case you are interested...

I think you've made an excellent choice to do DITHOR, as well as CTC! We will be doing DITHOR and CTC this year as well. We will have to share our year together here! HTH! Ask more questions if you have any - this board is full of helpful ladies like those who already answered here. I think you will love the board as much as you will love HOD! :D

Can I piggie back on this question...
If one's child is well above the reading level for he recommended boy's book interest...what does one do? I need help in composing a book list for an 8th grader (14yo).

Have you checked out the Level 7/8 booklist http://www.heartofdakota.com/drawn-into-optional7-8.php? Those go from 6.3 to 8.5 reading level and should be fine for an 8th grader. Even if they are a bit below his reading level that should be fine because you are trying to work on more skills than just reading comprehension. Another option is to get the Sample Book List. It offers more suggestions and they are divided by reading level and includes level 6/7/8. Here is a thread viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7765&p=56997#p56997 that discusses DITHOR for high school so it might give you some ideas as well. HTH! :D

Hey Patty,

Thank you for this reply. I read thru Carrie's post that you referred to. Very helpful. I think that I will go with the 7/8 reading list. Ds struggles and avoids writing...reading he loves, so I'd rather give him easier reading material and challenge him with the writing aspect of DITHOR. :)
Thanks,
Sonya
